Back in 2010(or maybe 2011, can't remember) we had a 5.1 in San Diego. I remember it clearly because the windows on my uncles house were shaking when I noticed it. Considering the lack of damage that occurred (except for some shattered glass), a 5.0 on Hawaii is really nothing to worry about.

I didn't even feel it.

"The quake struck near Kae'na Point in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park"

Is this a mistake? Kaena point is on Oahu. I've never heard of Kaena point in Volcano.

When Pele gets serious, he will spew lava and hellfire all over the Big Island. In this case, it looks more likely Pele just had a bad case of heartburn from some undercooked Spam.

Dear Hawaiians:

You are living on the tiny scab that formed over a bewilderingly massive magma plume beneath the Earth's crust. Said magma plume could become the largest super volcano the planet has ever seen without much warning.

Sleep tight!

SUPERVOLCANOS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY. The key to a really big ka-boom is that you need a cap on the volcano that makes the pressure build. Hawaiian volcanoes are too fluid; they don't even go boom like a Washington State volcano.

Biggest landslide seen by humans maybe. Or, if you're not on the island which slides into the sea, biggest tsunami. Everyone panic.

This is Jack Lord inviting you to watch next week as Five-O tackles its toughest challenge yet. "Forty Feet High--And It Kills!"

Wo Fat and his cronies sabotage Hawaii's Tsunami Early Warning System and plan to trigger a killer wave that could drown Honolulu.

Warren Oates, in a masterful portrayal of a geologist turned vengeful killer. Goldie Hawn as the crippled daughter who inspired his wrath--and tenderness in the heart of McGarrett. And Keye Luke in a star turn as the Communist conspirator there to take advantage of the vicissitudes of fate--McGarrett's arch-enemy Wo Fat.

It's a cracking criminal caper that could wipe the islands clean! "Forty Feet High--And It Kills!" Be here! Aloha.

My dad was stationed in Hawaii when I was about 4 or 5. I vaguely remember a few shakes. My fondest memories are of my kindergarten teacher(native Hawaiian) used to tell us old Hawaiian stories and legends. We even went on a field trip to Mt. Kilauea. :)

//I always wondered about the Commies vs. McGarrett plot lines.

On a serious note, several years ago on a trip to Hawaii we talked to a guy who helped run the Waikiki Aquarium. Their Tsunami plan involved, in part, the pouring of bleach into all the tanks with non-native species, so that a tsunami would not result in a ecological problem months or years later.

Quoted for the truth. Hawaiian volcanoes have low silicon content. They hardly ever erupt; instead you get a steady and gentle flow down the side of the island.

The Hawaiian islands are much more susceptible to erosion. One day they'll look like the Marshall Islands and then eventually they'll sink back into the ocean.

It seems lately that whenever a quake that big happens, there is usually another strong quake that happens 24-hours later somewhere else along the plate line.

We shall see.

Sure that volcano is dribbling a bit, but the pressure beneath it is so much greater than is actually escaping... otherwise it would not keep going. All they need is a slight expansion of the fracture in the crust and suddenly the output quadruples... or worse. It doesn't need to actually explode to kill everyone on the island(s).

There was an earthquake in Chile (new window). Don't know if the Big Island is along the same plate line, though.
