This usually is true. Intraparty fight don't usually resonate nationally. Gingrich is using national attacks resonating well beyond primary voters. Gingrich is hurting Romney in national polls.

Before the bu bu bu but Clinton/Obama comes out, those were actually GOOD candidates, unlike this field of clowns.
Obama would be shiatting his pants if the drawn out primary was between Jon Huntsman and Gary Johnson, but with Romney and Gingrich, he's having some hearty laughs.

I also don't think a long fight helps Mitt very much. For one thing, he's not good under pressure. He tends to crap the bed, as he did last week. Further, the more he's scrutinized and the more people inspect him, the less people like him. He's better off playing the crystal clean unassailable candidate of inevitability who's above the muck and the fray. When he has to get down and dirty he looks like the douchey, rich, petty frat boy villain in every bad 80s Animal House party comedy.

Of course, Gingrich is utterly ignoring polls about how well he'd or Mittens would do nationally against Obama while he's doing this.

He is trying to reuse the 2008 Democratic Narrative. The issue he faces though is that No one on the GOP is organized other than Romney. They go to a state, run an insane campaign, and then leave a path of desolation behind it. Obama and Clinton had an organisation set up that they could build and continue till election day. I don't see that here. Gingrich is looking one contest at a time, and Romney will be using his organization to deflect the issues plaguing his campaign.
When the Nomination happens, I can't see any campaign being in a position to go national they way Obama's did in 2008 (and now in 2012)

Breaking News: The collection of shysters, grifters, and other sleazeballs that makes up the GOP wants a long drawn out primary with Romney as the eventual winner because, a. Romney has a butt load of money to spend, and b. Romneys Wall Street friends have a butt load of money.

He hates unprecise brie. If you don't drain it for 18 hours and age it for 4-5 weeks in a French cellar, it will have too much ammonia and Reince Priebus will not be amused.

Then again Romney never had a popular sitting President impeached for lying about extra marital BJs while getting scoring his own (bj's, not impeachments).
I admit I don't understand what Republicans apparently think is so great about him, but outside of the GOP (and apparently South Carolina) he is hated more than even Rick "Bush Lite" Perry. Primary voters don't seem to think strategically (recall all the Christine O'Donnell types from last election season).

Gingrich is still robocalling in Virginia even though he isn't on the primary ballot. I can only think he's still doing this because he's already started his national campaign.

Obama built an organization on small donations. If Newt can harness the great unwashed masses of the Republican party, he'll have what it takes to keep toe to toe with the Romney Party Machine.

It's only good for them if Newt doesn't win. As it's looking now, however, Newt will demolish Romney in Florida and then the primary will effectively be over.

Warren Worthington III's point would actually make some sense for certain candidates.
For instance, the better a candidate's ideas are, the more exposure they should want. This is because their ideas will resonate with the public, as long as the public sees those ideas.
The opposite is true for a worse candidate. The worse a candidate is, the more minimal he should want his media coverage to be (as long as he gets
some
), so people vote for him misguidedly.
Now let's look at the GOP's crop of candidates and guess if more media exposure will help or hurt them. Hmmmmm, I wonder...

Hell no, by the time the election rolls around, we'll be sick of anyone with an (R) next to their name. The thing I find the MOST annoying about primaries is that these guys spend all of this time slashing each other to bits, and then they wake up one morning, get on their knees and start slobbering for all they're worth. It's sickening. Makes me trust them less, too.

While I'm all for debating issues and understand where candidates stand on issues... we need more GOP debates so close together like we need moon cheese.
Space stuff out and give folks a chance to process. Too many primaries too close together = debate fatigue and no one honestly wants to see them on TV every other day where they don't have anything to say except the collateral gossip. Let the folks weed themselves out and once you're down to 4 or so, then start on debates. Having debates with 8 people all saying that Obama sucks isn't meaningful or productive.

Nothing matters except what the Media does this summer/fall.
It is disgusting to see how the MSM has covered the GOP field thusfar, pretending that Cain, Perry and Bachmann were in any way legitimate. The MSM is nothing more than the PR Dept. of global corporatism. The interests of the Global Corporate Socialists depends on the illusion of choice through the two party system. One side gets up too far and they step in to knock them back down a notch. After 8 years of Bush, they sold us Black Bush.
All of the craziness (and legitimization thereof) from the GOP so far is part of a plan - to make Romney look normal by comparison. Right wingers will always vote GOP, they're not going to go donkey in the booth just to spite the Party because they didn't send up Perry or Gingrich. This is all engineered for the benefit of independent and Democrat voters - "Oh, yeah, that Romney guy seems pretty normal."

Well, Romney can always "lend" himself 200 million dollars and just spend his way out of a jam. Plus, he's the banker's candidate, so he'll have access to some hella good campagn cash (although he does already).
