I hate winter because my tan would fade if I didn't spend a fortune on tanning beds. And the beds stink because I always end up with a long white spot between my thighs were my junk gets trapped. I'm taking full advantage of the solar storm tomorrow - calling in sick, buying more baby oil, taking my lawn chair recliner up to the roof. It's only supposed to be 35F here tomorrow, but I don't care. I'm spending the entire day up there, completely nude, my junk taped over my belly button for decent spells. These solar storms really speed up the darkening process. If you live in the Indiana area, send me an e-mail and you can come over.

So if a pole flip occurred during the worst of this flare would it be pretty bad?

Or should I get all the extra ammo up out of the basement?

Not that I'm lazy or anything but has any one of these solar storms caused anything noteworthy to occur besides getting a science story in the news on a slow news day?

FTA: A powerful solar eruption is expected to blast a stream of charged particles toward Earth tomorrow (Jan. 24), as the strongest radiation storm since 2005 rages on the sun.

Unless you are monitoring sensitive scientific equipment - no.

I think they cause the northern lights to reach further south. Of course it's raining and windy as hell in Michigan right now, so that doesn't help us.

the solar storms do add 1 or 2 degrees to the forecasted temp. not sure about tanning.. but wont the tape leave yet another distinct line?

I was outside last night looking for auroras (it was supposed to be a decent night to maybe see them in the northern U.S.) but didn't see any. I didn't stay up all night or anything though. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I want my northern lights, dammit. Haven't seen any in years.

lol, as someone trying to get their job done on vpn that is having many issues right now, i am getting a kick out of this.

I just spend the time sewing decent in management. saying stuff like "people just let tech issues slide too often. this isn't like a bad crop season that we can blame on the rain, one of OUR employees messed this up, and it is costing productivity. someone is responsible."

hope that helps the IT's job go better.

LegacyDL: Not that I'm lazy or anything but has any one of these solar storms caused anything noteworthy to occur besides getting a science story in the news on a slow news day?

One knocked out an electrical grid, in a time before we had so many satellites in orbit which our civilization relies on. If the same were to happen now, it would fry those satellites, and you can say goodbye to GPS, the internet, your cellphone, as well as electricity.

And It's pretty much guaranteed to happen again eventually, on an even larger scale. Probably as soon as this next solar maximum.

TL:DR; one knocked out power in parts of canada in 1989, there have been several examples of satellites and other craft that have been disabled by solar storms, and they semi-regularly disrupt communication systems to some extent (depending on strength). Oh, and there was one in 1859 (the strongest ever observed) that, if it happened today, would probably destroy electrical systems on a national or even worldwide basis and leave us in the dark for months or even years.
