I found the vinyl LP version of the "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" soundtrack at Murphy's Mart in the budget bin for $1.00 in the early 1980's. Still own it.

I had Eddie and the Cruisers on cassette and I cop to buying Chinese Democracy. And my daughter used to have the Baha Men CD. We're doing our part for inexplicable album sales.

I once bought a Red Hot Chili Peppers album and had to sell it on the school bus the next day because it sucked so bad. Unfortunately, despite offloading it less than 24 hours after purchasing it, I am now part of a statistical grouping of people who spent money on shiatty albums.

No, you're thinking of Jethro Bodine's album, "The Bung Harvester", which beat out Beatallica for that year.

jaylectricity: The Last Action Hero Soundtrack was pretty good in its day.

That album was about 1/3 great tunes and 2/3 burgaled turds.

And you can thank the internet for us not having to spend $16.99 for such things any longer.

Last Action Hero is such an underrated movie. What came out that year? Jurassic Park, Philadelphia, Schindler's List, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Firm to name a few. It never had a chance.

I still wonder about the advisability of a singer named Dick Marx. He should have named his first album "Pecker Tracks".

There are many more where those came from. Back in the 80s-90s you couldn't preview albums before you bought them, which accounts for the huge used-CD business in the 90s. It also might take a little while for a song to become a hit, so when something became really popular the band was probably about to release their next album (or would hurriedly slap something together to capitalize on their 15 minutes) so people would just grab that. Record clubs also probably account for tens of millions of album sales that people probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise. Also, these are global sales and you'd be surprised at some of the things which are extremely popular in other countries.

And never underestimate the purchasing power, nor try to rationalize the tastes, of teenagers and single women in their 30s.

I thought it was entertaining, but the critics could not suspend their disbelief and thus blasted it. It had some good inside jokes such as why the (555) telephone prefix is used and it poked fun at how the bad guy always has to spend several minutes talking to the good guy before he kills him.

Earth, Wind, and Fire's cover of "Got to Get You into My Life" off of the Sgt. Pepper's soundtrack on that list was actually pretty good--if you didn't know what it was, you'd think it was a pretty original example of 70's soul. The rest of the stuff? Ugh.

I just read the lyrics (no youtubes at work) to that Hammer song (Break 'Em Off Somethin' Proper") and my god, what was that guy thinking? it has Suge Knight on it, and they make fun of Tribe Called Quest AND Run DMC??? ha ha, fool.

LeroyBourne: Last Action Hero is such an underrated movie

It seriously wasn't as bad as everyone seemed to think. I think it gets the bad rep because it was rumored to be Arnie's last movie and wasn't up to snuff vs. action classics like Predator.

The babershop quartet episode was Season 5 in 1993, several years after "Simpsons Sing the Blues" in 1990.

"Baby on Board" is on "Songs in the Key of Springfield," which is far better than "Sing the Blues" because it consists of songs and snippets from actual episodes. "Sing the Blues" was equal parts "normal songs done in Simpsons' voices" and "novelty songs written for the album that were never part of any actual episode." And it stank.

The problem with LAH is that it turned into the exact kind of movie that it was supposed to be making fun of. Well, that was the second problem, the first problem with the movie started on the day they cast that kid for the 'lead' role in the movie. If they had gone with just about anyone else they would have been better off. At some point (in the theater) I started rooting for the bad guy (either one) to win just to shut that kid up.

I was trying (unsuccessfully) to riff on the "misplaced Grammy" theme in the quoted post.

Not surprised to see soundtracks listed there, I used to buy them in the early 90s so I could have 2 or 3 songs I liked on one album. Also MTV did a nice job at the time releasing CDs with a bunch of one hit wonders.

I would spend hours making mix tapes for college road trips.

CD singles were also either rare or they were filled with remixes so they cost almost as much as the full album. The single really didn't exist for the customer between the death of the 45 and iTunes.

I'm not even a Garth Brooks listener, much less a fan, and I know the story behind the silly Chris Gaines character. The album was written as the soundtrack to a movie about an artist that remakes his image. He was paid A LOT to make the album and movie, but the movie got shelved by the studio.

So then you've got Garth, one of the most successful musician/songwriter/entertainer/showmen of his time, releasing and promoting this Chris Gaines nonsense, and he looks like a man losing his mind.

So while it was an odd thing to see go platinum, TFA's characterization is off.

I'm in line with you guys. Seriously, if you think it's bad and haven't seen it in 15 years or never saw it in the first place, watch it- it's on netflix, and is a fantastic send up of all of Arny's movie tropes. No, it's not Predator or T2- it's kinda like the "____ Movie" spoof guys made one just for Arnold, but it was actually funny and well done.

Back in the old days, even if people only liked one song, they had to buy the whole album, which inevitably pushed overly padded novelty LPs past the platinum mark. Exhibit A: Baha Men, who had been around, under one name or another, for a couple of decades before hitting it big with "Who Let The Dogs Out?

Actually, you could buy the cassette single. The B-side was either a throwaway track or a remix of the single.

Best In The World: "Any man who does not like dogs and want them about does not deserve to be in the White House." - Calvin Coolidge

It's a good question. Well, Baha Men may be corny in some instances. Like, I wouldn't play dat @ my weddings BUT it's a deep song 4 sporting events & gym mixes. It's also got a phat bottom. Have u hurrrd it thru a pair of Beats By Dre earbuds? If that doesn't up UR fitness I don't kno what will, bro. U can also play that song in many different arenas because they don't drop n bombs. Fo example, I wouldn't play Move biatch by Luda at a childs birthday party or 1st Communion unless they was 15+ but how many Quinceanera'z do u attend? So I think its all good.

Dialect aside, he's got a point. The song gained popularity because it lended itself to usage at sports events to get the audience pumped up even though they couldn't make out for shiat what the lyrics actually meant. Similar to Gary Giltter's "Rock and Roll Part 2" which is equally mediocre IMHO.

Agreed, although the kid does make it touch to watch. And the soundtrack has a few killer tracks from AIC (2 of them), Anthrax, Megadeth and more that weren't available anyplace else. Poison My Eyes alone is probably one of my favorite Anthrax songs.

True dat but the author was hitting the 90s. I actually owned this one:

I also found them for Lou Bega and Aaron Carter. Aside from the movie soundtrack and maybe The Simpsons Sing the Blues (which I also own), I believe all of these were available as a cassette single. I forget if there were CD singles. I want to say yes, but at the turn of the century, I was also using Napster (and, coincidentally, buying more CDs than I ever have in my life because there was no practical way to haul around your PC with you, and burned CDs had a pretty short life back then).
