"Welcome to Costa Cruises. This is your captain speaking, Francesco Schettino. We're having trouble with the left side of the ship, but it's nothing to worry about. Just like to let everybody know. In the meantime, have a glass of wine, and maybe some pizza; we're going to get back to you in just a little bit."

Well about forty minutes later, the voice came over the intercom. It was saying again, "Hello, this is your captain, Francesco Schettino once again. We're still having trouble with the left side of the ship. Just for precaution, we'd like to ask everybody who knows how to swim, you should go on the right side of the ship. And everybody who does not know how to swim, I think it's better you go on the left side of the ship. That's just for precaution; it's nothing to worry about."

Well about five minutes later, the voice come over the intercom was saying again, "Uh oh! April Day! April Day!" I guess he meant to say "mayday," but in Cropani that's the way they talk. He says, "It looks like we're gonna have to abandon ship. Everybody who knows how to swim, it's better you go right to the exit sign, and swim straight ahead. You got nothing to worry about, because we's less than 150 meters from shore. And everybody on the left side of the ship who does not know how to swim, we say to you, thanks a lot for sailing Costa Cruises."

I was reading an article about the sinking a couple days ago. The side ad was trying to sell me 'discounted Costa Concordia tickets'. That was full of win.

Brother_Mouzone: I actually dont think salmon are a bigger threat than the IRA. Good find!

I have to disagree. Hardly a month goes by where I don't hear about salmonella poisoning someone. They should at least put her as a higher priority than the IRA.

These aren't that uncommon. Aren't ads often chosen on a context-basis, based on what is in the article?

"Oh, this one's reading about a cruise ship! Let's show them some ads about cruises!"

2012-01-23 01:55:35 PM
I understand (and still laugh at) web ad placement, because its generally based on keywords in the actual content.

But, damn, for a real newspaper editor to let that slip by... on the front page?

Fark is actually highly susceptible to this sort of thing due to contextual advertising models.

What kind of God would allow us to be living in a world where Amy Winehouse is still alive, but Ace Frehley is not?

Used to be, that newspapers would rebuild pages that featured things like this. Twice in the '80s we missed deadline because we were removing airline ads from a section reporting on an airline crash. Now they just don't seem to care.
When the Sago mine disaster Link (new window) happened, we ran with the initial story that there were 12 survivors found. We still had 200,000 newspapers to print, when they found that only one survived. We printed the entire run knowing it was wrong. I almost quit that night. Freakin' editors wouldn't get out of bed and fix the damn story.

Maybe I'm being captain obvious here but the reason this happens to websites a lot is because they use some sort of script to scan the page for keywords and then deliver an ad that seems appropriate.

I see you are reading an article about a cruise ship so here is an ad for a cruise ship vacation.
