People lost track of fighters, managers and promoters in boxing because they refused to pay that much money for PPV showings of fights not worth seeing, in watered down classes with too many belts and organizations after having seen some of the greatest fights in history for free on regular TV so they refuse to pay for a shiatty version that is suspect, to say the least, in how it's been ran and who is fighting who and where.
That's my answer to Whaaa Happened.

Can't speak much to Don King specifically, but I'd say MMA has filled the void the the fractured, scandal-plagued, circus-like sport that modern day boxing has seemingly become. Can today's pop culture even name a current heavy weight boxing "star?" Is there one?

And, TBH, it's a very good answer.
I came into boxing in its rapid decline through the 90's. I loved the sport, but it's been close to a decade since I was able to care about it.

This. Also I believe that over the years boxing went international and people didn't care who the up and comer from Uzbeckibeckistanstan is. Also, people get mad when they pay $50 for main events that end less than half way through round 1.

I remember when Mohammad Ali's daughter was in a PPV match as a 'pre-fight', and that fight was the best of the night. Made you wonder why you ponied up $60 or whatever for the PPV when the title fight sucked.

I think the fact that the only 2 marketable heavyweights around are managed by Bernd Boente and King can't get in on the action played a small part.

Don King: "To the best of my relocation, or the effusiveness of my elocution...I am neither dead nor entombed....nor exhumed. I am still, to the behests of my inquests, still active in the world of pugilism...with no syllogism or organism holding me down. Reports of my demise....or the retorts of wiseguys...have been exaggerated with great untruths"
Boxing is dead because white/anglos do not follow it anymore. Check the audience of a PPV boxing match, and a MMA match, and notice the ethno/demographics....

What happened? He doesn't have many fighters even close to relevant, and the ones he has fight less often than most fighters, sometimes sitting for inexplicably long periods of time. Any half-decent propsect has better options than Don King these days.

What happened was MMA is a better sport. It has boxing, plus everything else. And most exhibit good sportsmanship. Although UFC is gaining popularity, it seems like it may be heading too far towards the "entertainment" aspect. I fear I will be turned off of it within a couple years...

True, boxing was in decline before the UFC started up but it can be argued that MMA is robbing boxing of it's future fans and athletes. NCAA wrestling is driving MMA in the US and it churns out hundreds of fighters EVERY year.
How many colleges have competitive boxing teams anymore ? Other than the 3 military academies I can't think of even one.

The Klitschkos got a hold of the titles and then refused to fight each other, and the whole of the heavyweight division died because of it.
