KarmicDisaster: Clinton Township is a long way from Detroit.

They are in the city though. I saw one on the bridge to Belle Isle of all places back in Sept. Definitely was a coyote and not a stray dog.

About once every 6 months some idiot puts up signs around my hood saying "COYOTE SIGHTING! KEEP CATS INSIDE!"

As if the coyotes aren't there all the time and that there is ever a time you shouldn't keep cats inside.

To the people who haven't seen 'Hart's War": Red Wings are Negro bomber escorts pilots during WWII. They got smoked; smoked HARD. They threw everything they could to get the Negros to drop out of the Army Air Corps (there was no Air Force then)...but he Negros just kept fighting...fighting...until those Negros won the right to fly bomber escort missions for the United States of America.

I saw a coyote yesterday biting at my ankle. My cat saved me by jumping on my
face and ripping my eyeballs out.

Saw a dead 'yote on the side of Walton Road in Rochester about a month ago. I've seen a few dead on the side of 696 in Farmington Hills. Best thing to do is to keep your pets indoors or go outside with them. Keep your trash in a can with a lock-down top. The coyotes will move on if there is nothing to eat.

Or keep a rifle or shotgun near the back door. Is there a market for coyote fur?

2012-01-23 01:35:44 PM
If your dog gets killed by a coyote, it is a clear sign that you need a bigger dog. If everyone on that block owned an English Mastiff or a boxer, there wouldn't be enough left of the coyotes to throw into a dumpster...

I knew it just a matter of time before some people got into the business of sneaking in illegal Canadians. And the real problem is that these undocumented fellows don't even know what bacon is.

Coyotes have been spotted downriver as well. My relatives on Grosse Ile had their golden lab attacked by one.

I've seen them in the woods around NYC ( withing 40 miles of the city ) many times.

They were not the least bit frightened of people too.

Just shoot them with a .22. Settings traps requires a lot of effort because you have to check them every day or so and they can catch other things.

Use a subsonic .22 load, also. The noise can be 'explained' as a loud air rifle, as it doesn't have the supersonic 'crack' of a normal .22 load. It helps if you have a fairly powerful air rifle that you can pass off as what you used if anyone asks questions.

When you do hit one, don't go after it immediately. Let it lie down and bleed out. My neighbor went after one that I had shot one time, and he pushed it until it went into a fairly dense residential area, where he lost track of it. I was waiting for it to bleed out so I could recover it. It had laid down in the woods a couple hundred yards from where I shot it, but when he started tracking it, it got up and started moving again.

Another option that is quieter is to use a bow, if you are a bow hunter. I called in a coyote in the woods behind the house one time, and took a shot, but an intervening branch deflected the arrow up.

/Predator hunting is pretty damned fun.
//That coyote coming at me, trying to find the source of the 'smacking' noises, looked like a farkin' dire wolf.

Or have real dogs that can defend themselves. Those coyotes better come correct if they think they're going to fark with my pit and shephard.

/fingers crossed
