Yaks are cool, they're far from plane. As a matter of fact, Jack. I Like Yaks! Big and black, making tracks, carrying a Sherpa's pack, yak.

Some of the civilians in that part of the world seem pretty heavily armed lately.

Nah. Those things used to rape infantry and light armor stuff like Jeeps and V-2's. Also pretty good against power plants.

What's Russia's angle on this? Is it some leftover cold-war pissing match they have with the U.S.? I don't understand how quashing the Syrian revolution can help them.

Perhaps short-term oil gains? But then they're kicking the can down the road, Syria will just revolt in another 5-10 years and it starts all over again. If they let it go and help shepherd in a stable government they can have a permanent solution.

Or are they playing the Shadows against the Vorlons?

Why do they have veto power on the UN Security Council again? Why are they even on it for that matter?

The Irresponsible Captain: What's Russia's angle on this? Is it some leftover cold-war pissing match they have with the U.S.? I don't understand how quashing the Syrian revolution can help them.

After the cold war there was a big sell off of cheap used Soviet era planes that left the Russian air craft industry in shambles. In addition a lot of their factories were now outside of Russia and thus they lost a lot of infrastructure. Now they have to deal with the Swede's Grippen, F-16s, Chinese/Pakistani planes and Israeli upgrade kits to old planes pricing them out of the market. The YAK-130 is a trainer that can do light ground attack work, their hope is to show it as effective since there are few ground attack jets up for sale (most are prop for the added time in the air).

I think their angle is to show off their weapon system and generate sales.

7wolf: Reading up on these things, they don't seem exactly formidable as far as planes go.

It's a nice little light attack platform. Since it's got modern avionics, it is probably a far more accurate delivery system than anything in the Syrian inventory.

Wouldn't do much against a force with credible air defense assets, but it will be very, very effective COIN (counterinsurgency) role.

Mishno: Syrian protesters "find" a couple of crates of FIM-92 Stingers in......

MANPADs aren't that effective against fixed wing aircraft - particularly twin engined ones.

The biggest thing to take from the deal is that it looks like the Russians think Assad or some other friendly leadership's going to be in power for a while

Everybody sing!

Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcases

And we have to clean up after them
And our sadle sores are the best
We proudly wear womens' clothing
And seering sandblows up our skirts!

And the buzzards, they soar overhead
And poisonous snakes will devour us whole
And our bones will bleach in the sun

And we will probably go to (censored)
And that is our great reward
For being the

Because they're one of a very few nations that can turn any place on the planet into a glass parking lot without having to do so much as get up off the couch.

Maybe they're just dropping a "hint" to remind us that the US is not the only outside entity capable of meddling in Middle Eastern affairs?

This clever plan that Israel and the US are executing against Iran - did they think it all the way through?

Yep, basic light strike aircraft/trainer. more than enough to deal with light armor, infantry, and of course rag tag civilian resistance fighters.

That is awesome! Man... It is good to see Russia being Russia again. I've really been disappointed with Russia, I was actually a bit disappointed to see the fall of the USSR. I suppose that that won't make sense to some folks but, well, Russians need to be Russian much like we need to breathe. It seems almost discriminatory to not let them be Russian. But, they've been a bit more antagonistic (increasingly so in the past few years) and no longer act like they've been cowed into submission.

I, for one, am glad. It makes the world a much more amusing place.

The whole point of creating the UN is to prevent WW3. You generally want the other side at the table when it comes helping keep world peace.

Against peasant infantry with little more than AKs and RPGs there isn't much difference whether its a F 22 or a WWII era piston engined plane. Either way YOU GONNA GET RAPED.

So its more than up to peasant raping.

They look at it as a weapons contract. Syria will probably use it on their own people, not on their neighbors. Anti Western would be giving Hezbollah weapons for free. These are being sold, way overpriced by the way, and if anything this move is anti Syria, not Anti Western.
