Another thing that cops will have to learn does NOT make them magically seen by all who will then do exactly the right thing and give the right of way...
Have fun with the initial round of lawsuits.

I've been thinking about getting a louder horn for my motorcycle. This might just push me enough to do it.

I'm sure these will help when the cop decides to blow through the red light by turning his flashers/siren on 2 feet before the intersection and then back off again when he clears the intersection on his way to a "call".

They would probably get more success with people getting out of their way on the street if they would STOP rolling around normally with their lights on. Seriously in DC the cops ALWAYS have some form of flashing lights on, even when they're not doing anything. So you just get used to flashing lights and don't pull over or get out of their way. Plus they don't even use their sirens half the time. So how the hell am I supposed to suddenly understand that they want me to get out of the way?

With the windows up in our cars, it is difficult to hear a siren from an approaching police, fire or ambulance until it's almost right on top of us, even if the radio isn't turned up very high. No, my hearing isn't almost gone either. Modern vehicles are designed to exclude outside noise as much as possible, and that includes sirens as well apparently.

We have these in New York City. I actually kind of appreciate them. The subwoofer makes it so you don't just hear the car approach, you feel it. With the din of the city and pedestrians on phones, with ipods or just hard of hearing, it clears the street much faster.

In my city the cops need louder sirens. You can't hear them when they are driving in traffic and they are a few cars back. Fire trucks and ambulances are easily 2-3x louder. Part of that is positioning of the siren, but mostly the police ones are just quieter.

someone doesn't hear you cop, someone hits you cop, which I really doubt happens very often at all, throw them in jail.
that's how you handle this.
you don't further annoy all of society with some psychological warfare hardware meant to drive the folks at the branch davidian compound insane.
you don't give that f*cking device to 500 dipshiat 25 year olds that barely made it through criminology at the local state college so they can play with.
we pay you ticket assholes on are streets that turn the bass up to 100 decibels, not f*cking make bass at 200 decibels. WTF is going on in this society that this can happen?

I listen to sports talk/comedy/or other "talk" radio (when did I get old?) and with my windows up, I don't hear any sirens until the vehicle is pretty much right up near me. I don't have loud music playing at all, so it's either my truck being well-insulated from noise, or the sirens just aren't that loud to me?

They have some here. They're not really loud (works to a couple hundred feet) and the sound cone is quite narrow. Rather than hear it from afar, you sort of feel it as a noticable rumble.
They're work well in pedestrian heavy places. People GTFO the way much faster. I'd rather they do this than blare a regular siren for #x minutes...

I think that the very effective noise isolation in many cars (not just luxury cars) is one of the big reasons they're trying this. When I'm in my car, I don't hear a siren until the emergency vehicle is pretty darn close.

I remember 10 or 20 years ago somebody was working a system that allowed patrol cars to hijack your radios and play a siren noise inside your car. Glad that didn't pan out if it was true.

I can see why they would have them in a city like NYC or even Albany because it is hilly with narrow streets which makes for a lot of blind spots but what does some little shiat town in florida need it. Just because your hillbilly sheriff saw one in the big city?

Yes and it only projects directly in front of the vehicle, rather than all sides.

Low frequencies are not directional like high frequency is. Thats why you can put a subwoofer anywhere and it still does it's job.

I'm glad this isn't in Miami-Dade county. Since we're laying off a bunch of police down here over budget issues, I'd object to spending money on "improved" sirens when the old ones work just fine. Not that my objection would mean anything, but I'd object, dammit!

I'm not sure how the technological particulars are, but I know that you can generally only hear it if you are in front of the vehicle. It is an odd sound, it's not just a straight 200hz tone.

Our department only turns their signals on for life-threatening emergencies, to safely get through an intersection, or to pull someone over. Even though they are on their way to a break-in to warehouse after-hours they will speed, but the lights are only used at intersections. Emergency vehicles can legally go 20 miles over the speed limit without using their emergency lights, but must have them on for higher speeds. People tend to freak the fark out and drive dangerously when they see emergency lights, so our emergency departments are trying to use them less. Our fire trucks and ambulances do the same thing as far as only using their lights at intersections for lesser emergencies. It is generally safer for the public.
Or, you know, ZOMG ABUSE OF AUTHORITY!!
