For youngin's who don't remember 1989, 2 Live Crew was the advent of vulgarity in mainstream rap. 'Hip hop' hadn't entered the caucasian venacular yet.

It would be highly amusing to see these 50-somethings sing D*ck Almighty.

Think these guys ever wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and cry aloud, "What the fark have I done? I took anti-intellectualism to a stinking new low, glorified crass commercialism and treated misogyny like it was a party favor to be shared around. Lord, I was wrong! Forgive me!"

Yeah, me either.

Just don't let them sing the National Anthem. Just heard Stephen Tyler's version, had to bail when he got to "rocket's red glare".
Seriously, leave this song to trained singers who can hit the high notes.

I remember when my older brother had the cassette. Shortly after store clerks started getting arrested for selling their tapes, my dad asked to borrow the cassette from my brother to take it to work and play for his fellow workers just to see what all the hubbub was about.

We got a laugh out of that.

Sadly, 2 Live Crew was further proof that fundies are retarded. If the Jeebus Krispies hadn't made a stink over their "Nasty as They Wanna Be" album, it would have disappeared a few months after clubs got tired of playing "Me So Horny."

Instead, their manufactured outrage elevated this group of illiterate dipshiats to platinum record sales and first amendment martyrdom.

Not a fan of the chick who sang the 25 minute version before the Niners game. Nice voice, but let's get going-it's not that long of a song. And by the way, to those who watched, who is she?

Let's not get too carried away with ourselves here. Rap was hardly an esteemed musical genre at that time.

Kristen Chenowith. Singer, former West Wing alum, and a front-runner for the Cougar/spinner hall of fame.
Plus, she does a lot of Broadway musicals, which might explain why she got booked in San Francisco.

Between the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, and N.W.A., the late 80s had some heavy hitters.

Truthfully, some of the best rap albums of all time came out of that time frame.

I prefer to think of them as an early example on how to successfully fuse rap and rock, engineers of some of the most memorable beats of all time, and the group that are not only are the godfathers of gangster rap, but who still carry some of the most powerful influence on hip hop songwriting and production today.

But hey, I'll let you get back to your Will Smith albums. He raps happy.

Whatever aura you've created for the white-boy gimmick band, the Aerosmith coattail-riding Adidas adverts, and the preschool rhyme slingers, you're fully entitled to hold on to. But to say that they or rap music at that time were held in high esteem by anyone but a few heads is just wrong. The genre was looked down on as garbage music.

Which is why at the end of the 80s, each of the groups I mentioned ended up on several "Best of the Decade" lists.

But hey, Tipper Gore supports your arguments, and if anyone knows about artistic merit, it's Tipper Gore.

You're trying to say they weren't held in high esteem, despite being commercially and critically acclaimed, not to mention influential in some regard to nearly every hip-hop group performing today.

Say what you will, but their rants concerning the 1st Amendment were spot-on, lyrically; and even delivered with a degree of style, albeit not one that everyone (read: Tipper) would find agreeable. Their "message" tracks were much more soulful, not exactly profound, but showed a completely different level than "Me So Horny".

Exactly. I was a white middle class college kid when that album hit the news as a 1st amendment champion. I loathed rap music at the time but I bought a copy of their cassette anyway just to support the cause. I honestly laughed all the way through the album. It was a comedy album to me. I don't recall -- did anyone actually take it seriously?
