I doubt they'll make any real impact, but they are fun to watch.

Wouldn't it be more likely that Anonymous contaminated an upstream DNS node and pointed it at some other IP address than they actually deleted all the files on the server (and yet left the server in running condition)?

I had a neighbour a few decades ago who kept putting his front door key in a fake rock in a pot plant on his porch, next to his door. Needless to say, he was robbed. Then amazingly, he kept doing it and got robbed again. Wasn't till then that he realised how monumentally stupid it was.

That gives you the security of recovering from a lost key, without the risk of thieves gaining easy entrance.

interesting opinion i heard on npr -- SOPA coverage on network tv was almost non-existent because the corporate owners of said networks were all major supporters of SOPA, and wanted to minimize the importance and extent of the protests

so i guess thats why cbs was taken down?

Here's the thing though, when Anon does something like this the general public reaction is always one of "OMG THEY'RE FIRING THEIR LASER" whereas people who actually work with computers look at it as "Oh they took down the poster". If they had actually managed to, I don't know hack the actual server that contained data that was pertinent to their business model instead of just tearing down a web site it might be a more credible threat in the IT community. Say like when Sony had that major compromise of their player database and lost consumer information that could affect people in a real way. Otherwise this is more of an inconvenience then an actual threat.

Oh I agree - they probably didn't lose any data...but if I were in their IT department I'd be freaking paranoid unemployed after an intrusion like this one.

I don't see what's so entertaining about abusing technology; it's not hard to toss a monkey wrench in the works if you have nothing better to do. I work for a major phone company and can record audio on calls, but I have absolutely no inclination to do so unless the trouble report requires it. I have a feeling if Anonymous types had that capability they'd do it just to get their jollies.

Sounds like they owned one or more CBS servers, if they were a little more patient, they could have subtly changed things here and there and avoided detection for a while... Then wait for a Really Big Story ® (like the Presidential Election) and post a bogus one.. Gingrich Wins in a Landslide!11! Many more lulz that way.


Perhaps if they gained access to the actual computerized voting machines on election night. I get the feeling those things are about as secure as a 12 year-old hillbilly riding in the back of a pick-up truck.

Actually, you take a dump in the front yard. Hide the key in the poo (it's easy to place in there while it's fresh and squishy). Everyone will think it's dog poop and not go near it. When you are locked out you can dig the key out of the fake dog poo, which is actually real human poo, and gain access to your house. Then you can go inside and wash your hands.

Then just take another dump in the yard and put the key back. You can even play it up in front of your neighbors "oh darn! some dog pooped in my yard again!"

Kinda like shooting politicians and CEOs. While the short-term results are nice, in the long run that will lead to more repression unless the people take it all the way, no half-assing like DDOS attacks.
