Also, this town can vote with their wallets. If McDonald's doesn't turn a profit there then it'll shut down and they won't have to worry about it being there.

You can always vote not to have something in your town.

Carmel, CA, has long had a policy of no neon lights and no artificial flowers on the main street, to preserve the picturesque charm of the town. If you don't want chain restaurants, that's your right, if everyone votes for it.

You know, a Big Mac with bacon would be great. And a large fries and a shake for dipping and a pair of apple pies and a coke....

Why are you called the Happy Canadian?

As one of the doctors in TFA pointed out, it's not a health issue -- it's about the role of government. The important fact here is that the city doesn't have the right to do what its constituents are asking. You can vote to block fast food restaurants if you want, but you have to do it across the board. Del Taco and Carl's Jr. would have to be evicted, or else McDonald's can make a discrimination case and win.

Adventists also don't dance, so its exactly like Footloose.

Of course Kellogg was an Adventist, so they are responsible for breakfast cereal, so its not like they're evil, just boring.

I don't care to get into a religious debate.

So, what the town should do is politely tell McDonald's that they don't want them. If McDonald's builds anyway, just don't go there and watch them pack back up. I think it would be absolutely hilarious if they had to bus in employees because no one would work there, then had to fold up shop and say, I guess you really didn't want us.

When will Americans learn to vote with their wallets?

Even if this was not a law, which it is, I'm afraid I would have a lot of difficulty endorsing an enterprise which is as fraught with genuine peril as I believe this one to be. Besides the burgers and the fries which always seem to accompany such an event the thing that distresses me even more is the spiritual corruption that can be involved. These restaurants and this kind of food can be destructive, and, I'm afraid you're going to find most of the people in our community are gonna agree with me on this.

For 81 years, the post office didn't deliver mail on Saturdays, the Adventist Sabbath, opting for Sunday instead. The postal service ended that policy last spring in a cost-cutting move, which faithful Adventists took as another slap at their traditions.

And since when is government, or a government agency, permitted to bow down to the desires of any particular religion? Look, ya dweebs...take care of your own traditions. That ain't the government's job. If McDonald's meets all the requirements to build there, let 'em build. You have the same rights as anyone else: you can protest, get petitions signed, vote on what you like or don't like, or simply don't eat or work there. But don't get all butthurt because the government isn't putting your particular traditions on a pedestal. Stupid Flanders.

I was once a "guest" at an Adventist hospital. Nice place, and the staff were great. It all went downhill when I got the room service menu; not a scrap of meat to be found. Once I was able to walk, I shuffled off down to the cafeteria, thinking things would get better. Nope. Kick-ass salad bar, which was about the only thing I could stomach. Anything that was intended to resemble real food (chili, tacos, pizza, burgers, etc.) was all tofu, TVP, seitan or vegetable patties. Made me ill all over again.

so starting my chain of massage parlors there might not be the best bet?

i have no love for mcdonald's but i hope their lawyers ramp on these freaks. this community reads like something out of a sci-fi movie. a 1950's black & white, where the townsfolk are taken over by replicants.

as others said: they already have 2 other franchise names in the town. little late now to start blocking commerce.

I gave up fast food after Christmas. Now McDonald's grosses me out. I think they put a chemical in their food that makes you crave it fortnightly.

I wouldn't eat a burger from them now. I would rather have one from home or a steakhouse.

Blech.

Is this the town we see on the Hidden Valley commercials? I was wondering where we'd find a place were a carnival would find visitors happily eating nothing but veggies and no candy or junk food in existance. Those commercials always seemed to rub me a bit wrong.
