I don't mind blood sports like fighting to the death with knives on your feet. What I do mind is making animals do it. It's not natural for the birds to have nowhere to escape.

If you want blood, you gotta risk bleedin' first. In Rome, gladiators got pussy and money like you would not believe. Others got dead. We can find all kinds of people to step up to the challenge and with modern medicine it would probably be pretty safe even with real swords. Cockfighting is a natural part of a chicken's breeding cycle. Normally they just run the other one off. So the birds go at it and they go at it hard and there will be a clear winner and a clear loser. It's like kick boxing with knives. I see the appeal, but it triggers a deep sense of lack of fair play in my brain. You do no let people exploit widdle animals like that. I'd like to see people who abuse animals be given the exact same treatment. So we'd drown that NFL shlub in a bucket and ducttape straight razors to cockfighters and put them in a pit to fight.

The animal-rights people who bring out all the illegal drugs, murder and mayhem that goes on at some of these things often neglect to realize that its BECAUSE blood sports are mostly illegal, that they're going to attract other illegal elements. Legal sports generally don't have the same degree of meth, whoring and murder swirling around them as illegal sports.

That said, I'm just not sure how it's better that all the gamecocks get euthanized (killed) instead of being fought (killed). If the goal is to prevent cockfighting, fine, but why kill the chickens? They're not going to run amuck and slaughter the neighbors after all.

Euthanasia is probably a more humane end to the birds than a bloody rooster knife fight to the death. Better to put the birds to sleep than have them kill each other for fifteen minutes. And it's not like they'd make good pets. No, they won't slaughter the neighbors, but have you ever met a mean rooster? I have. And he was just your standard barnyard leghorn. He was bad enough. I can't imagine have a bred fighter around...

The difference being that the idea that black people were somehow physically and mentally deficient/different had no scientific basis and thus as a justification for denying them rights had no merit.

Animals however, are scientifically different and mentally inferior - thus making it rather ridiculous to try to give them 'rights'.

It doesn't follow that animals should have rights because most countries have animal cruelty laws. They have such laws because our cultures generally evolve where certain (cute cuddly) animals have long emotional ties to people.

Theres no logical reason to grant "rights" to species that are unable to also perform "duties". Treating species without the capacity to be a moral actor as moral agents is just bizzare and illogical.
