He's certainly gotten better at his craft over the years. Like, if there was a Most Improved Academy Award, Brad Pitt would win it.

But he took on some seriously challenging roles early in his career, and he just wasn't polished enough to deliver them very well. Seven was one of those roles. It also didn't help that he was acting alongside Morgan Freeman, an acting god who made him look like a two-bit amateur.

However, I think it was these difficult performances that he stumbled through that made him better, because they constantly challenged him. He's never one to take an easy script. I think he really started hitting his stride after Fight Club. Before that he was just another pretty boy, the Rob Lowe of the 90s.

No, that wasn't it. He was seriously bad in some scenes. "farkin' Dante" in the library, for instance. But he was terrible -- highschool drama club level -- in that final scene. I don't know how many takes they gave him, but that couldn't have been the best one, and I don't know why they picked that one. "What's in the booooox?" like a whiny 7-year old. And then "Oh God.... oh.... oh God." With a scrunch on his face. It was Shatner levels of camp, which is fine if the source material calls for it, but not in a suspense-heavy piece like this one.

It was so out of place it was almost cartoonish. Like he was doing a parody of the scene.
