Why do companies lower alcohol levels in their products?

People don't drink for the wonderful taste... they drink to get farked up.

Because then, you have to buy more to achieve the desired effect.
Even though the "brewers" will claim it's for your own well being, it all comes down to how they can make more money.

I'll maybe drink a Stella, but there's plenty of better selections to make. Plus, the people who get snockered on Bud probably could use a reduction in their alcohol intake.

So, basically, I'm okay with this.

If you RTFA you would see Britain has a tax on beverages above 5.0% alcohol so they are scaling it back to 4.8% to avoid taxes. No real difference in the number of beers it takes to get drunk (unless it takes you more than 20 beers)

Stella Artois is the Coors Light of Europe sold to gullible Americans who think they are being trendy by drinking it.

Typical liberal government. Taking away the ability to enjoy my beer without having to go to the bathroom every 26 minutes.

I'm really sick of these Fark headlines demeaning the taste of urine.

I'm actually allergic to Budweiser. Not sure what it is but something in it gives me the same symptoms as hay fever. No other beer does it and I can drink other Bud products with no problems.

i'm surprised anheuser-busch being allowed to ship product to the UK was not perceived as an act of war.

my apologies to all across the pond. if i had the power none of this would have happened.

Sometime doing a very bad thing to a product doesn't really affect it at all. Pretty much depends on what you're starting with I guess...

People who drink Stella are mostly women. Women are often concerned about their weight, hence their caloric intake. So this makes sense, sorta.

FWIW Stella doesn't take like piss IMHO. It's far worse than that.

I had a Surly Smoke last night at the bar, I've never returned a beer in my life it was disgusting(or atleast to say smoked beers are not for me). A crisp watery bud would have been better.

Cost increase for less product. Just like everything else these days it seems.

I'm saddened to say that Stone's "Vertical Epic" this year is horrendous. Only time I can remember pouring a full beer down the drain.

I don't allow myself to drink 151 anymore. I don't remember the last time and Mrs. Smurf won't tell me about it. That's a subject best left alone and never repeated.

Lately I've taken to flavoring vodak myself. Mrs. Smurf likes the skittles infusions and I'm trying to get a decent apple pie infusion. Fark beer, we're about getting farked up Right Now.

Stella and Becks taste like piss?

That's a comment on an American website? Really?

OK, they're not the best beers in the world but they're not bad and they don't have to be super-chilled so that punters can't taste them.......

I guess you guys are just jealous that they've both been going longer than your country, eh?

/fully appreciate that not all American beers are like making love in a canoe, but there are a MILLION shiattier beers to pick on before you start knocking Stella

Old Rasputin? Excellent choice. If you're a stout fan, though, I've got to recommend Yeti. Damn fine beer, and actually the one that first got me started on craft brews.

Oh shut up dude, if we think those beers suck it ain't a big deal. America has some of the best beers in the world, to be honest, but all you arrogant for no reason Europeans get is our cheap shiat. Becks and Stella are weak as hell and can't claim much superiority to Bud or Coors. I guess we could pick on some worse beers but the article isn't talking about them so it would be irrelevant. Also, why would anyone care how old a shiatty beer is? Budweiser is a shiat ton older than Sierra Nevada but the younger beer is a shiat ton better.

Been about 10 years since I have been in a pub in the UK, but I thought Stella was an OK lager. I liked Worthington creamflow the best though. Whenever I got one I couldn't put it down. Obscure?

Largest brewer to cut Stella Artois, Budweiser and Becks alcohol volume from 5% to 4.8%
Cutting the alcohol volume will save AB InBev tens of millions of pounds and offset duty hikes

In other news, businesses change their behavior in response to government regulation.

In other other news, governments still don't seem to understand this.
