(Deadspin) Fail FOX aired an English Premier League match live on broadcast TV for the first time. Too bad lots of affiliates decided "Corky Romano" was more compelling television   (deadspin.com) divider line 141

Is that like cricket or something?

For the first time, what, in 2012? Fox airs EPL games every year, dumbmitter.

2012-01-22 02:41:41 PM
This was the first time on the main affiliate for FOX, not Fox Soccer, at least in the Seattle marketplace. I think thats what it meant. Thats how Fox was promoting it all week on both channels.

2012-01-22 02:59:24 PM
to be fair, EPL games have a better plot and acting, which is why it still hasn't caught on with American audiences.

2012-01-22 03:16:45 PM
Americans don't care about a soccer game?
I'M SHOCKED!

Corky Romano was on in the Detroit market.

Today was the first time in history an EPL match has been aired live on broadcast TV in the United States.

First time an EPL match was "live" on the main Fox network is what I believe is unique here. The matches are always on tape delay.

Also, thankfully Denver's Fox network showed it. I luckily stumbled upon it.

No, live on network TV. I watch the live EPL games on Fox Soccer on Sat and Sun mornings.

Although if I was in Denver I'd just go to the British Bulldog.

Anyone notice that most of the markets that didn't air the game were smaller markets and many aired their regular religious programming?

Duh, everyone is resting for football and bypassing soccer

Atlanta showed infomercials. Infomercials.

2012-01-22 05:29:48 PM
I'm going to guess that they were unable to sell the local commercial time and were forced to go with infomercials or other programming to generate some revenue.

By 'Fox', we are here talking about 'the same set of airwaves that brings you American Idol, Hell's Kitchen, the NFC, and Over-Rated/The Hill Animated Shows'.

Watched the game. Piers Morgan- who was in the studio and an Arsenal fan- was pissed. It was the best thing I've watched on a Sunday morning in some time.

2012-01-22 05:41:46 PM
Also, the Toluca/UANL game on Univision immediately afterward wasn't half-bad either.

Interesting that Atlanta didn't air it, as it's a Fox O&O.

I know. For something that was considered to be a grand experiment for Fox, I'm surprised they weren't more strong and insistent saying that these stations must show the games live.

Unless they do that, the affiliates will continue to fark it up. Luckily the St. Louis Fox station got it right. Usually they do.

I'd watch Corky Romano if given the choice.

Yep. First time live on a broadcast network. And a grand total of 4 people tuned in.

Did the game end in a 0-0 tie? If so the affiliates were right.

2012-01-22 06:40:19 PM
I would watch The View while a midget takes a sledgehammer to my balls than watch soccer.

well, maybe not a midget.

2012-01-22 06:44:32 PM
When did Fox make the agreement to air the game? Because I doubt they can compel local affiliates to give up airtime to the network on short notice. Most of these stations that didn't air it probably have syndication agreements for that time slot that they can't cheaply ignore. Not to mention the already-said point that in these markets at least, the game would have probably been less of a draw for viewers than even religious programming.

2012-01-22 06:44:47 PM
To be fair some of the affiliates that aired religious programming may have been contractually obligated to run said program in that particular time slot and opted to run the game on a tape delay later in the day.

English soccer isnt that popular in America?

There are several soccer pubs in Atlanta that would disagree with you (and also drink your ass under the table).

Yeah, was in my local pub today watching the game, Arsenal sure pissed that one gone, I figured it might of been a fighting chance since the 8-2.....football game in the previous meeting.

/rubbish for sure, yes I was the only one in the bar drinking, then again I was drinking $1 pints of newcastle brown ale - quite nice :)

Subby, there are 210 media markets in the US, most of which have a FOX affiliate. That means it was only pre-empted in about 10% of the country.

On the other hand, anyone being subjected to Corky Romano is just inexcusable.

So you're admitting they were wrong?

mikaloyd: You dont say!

Not likely. Many reports indicate that, with increased access from streaming services and having the internet in general, the EPL is possibly more popular than MLS is in the US. And likely every other country in the world, too, I suppose.

R Kelly's Doo Doo Butter: To be fair some of the affiliates that aired religious programming may have been contractually obligated to run said program in that particular time slot and opted to run the game on a tape delay later in the day.

I don't know how any of that works, but I would think that the network would reserve the right to preempt any and all local programming for whatever the hell it wants to show, regardless of what's airing

23 of 185. So 12%, but remember this is something Fox made a HUGE deal about.

Plus, one of the markets was Atlanta and San Francisco relegated it to a subchannel. You can go look up the percentages of each market if you want, then add them up.

Corky Romano or soccer.. hmm.. tough choice. I might have to go with Corky on this one. While I might marvel at the flopping skills of soccer players, I can already do that when I watch the Spurs in a more entertaining sport. Soccer might be fun to play, but it's dreadful to watch. I'd rather watch baseball, or even cricket, or even WWE, and that's not even a sport.

I was counting the ones that were moved to subchannels as aired, but you bring up a good point about Fox making a big deal about this.

The EPL is waaaaay more popular than MLS in the US

Many Fox affiliates should be lauded for this decision, beats the hell out of watching soccer
