this primary fight has just become very interesting (and very expensive for newt and mittens).

This is terror. Chest-clutching, breath-sucking, soul-shaking panic. This is your teenage daughter telling you, "I think I'm in trouble." This is a Turkish border guard pulling you into a holding room when you've got a baggie of coke in your pocket. This is what George H.W. Bush famously called "deep doo-doo."

Since Newt is hopelessly unelectable, Karl Rove is probably shiatting bricks, too. So that's a bright spot.

I think HBO should do a free month and just show Big Love over and over and over.

I'm sure Newt could get one of his dark minions of wealth to do that for him.

Is the show accurate, meh... Who cares. It'll freak out the so-called normies and they will never vote for Willard.

Which is great, because Newt couldn't get enough of the Independent vote to come close to carrying anything but the southern states.

2012-01-22 10:06:45 AM
Meh, Newt's other girlfriends will magically feel the need to come out now.

*Everyone* should be in panic mode. I know there's a lot people that think Obama will "waltz" to victory, but GOP populists already control the House with a good chance to take the Senate. The President's approval is in the mid-forties. If Newt becomes president, freedom in this nation is over. We've already elected Reagan and W. Bush, two the worst presidents in American history within the last 30 years, that have put us firmly on the road to neoliberal plutocracy and long term decline -- a Newt presidency is not impossible.

Relax already. Gingrich is not going to be president of anything.

South Carolina? Please.

From Ronald Reagan in 1980 through John McCain in 2008, the winner of this primary has always gone on to be the Republican nominee.

Holy shiat, I forgot about that. Doesn't mean it will this time, but that's awesome. The GOP has never had someone different win each of the first three contests before either though, so SC usually means coalescing around a nominee.

Florida will matter quite a bit. If Mittens can keep his lead there and win, Gingrich and his non-existent campaign infrastructure won't be able to exist through the next month of nothingness, which is then followed by Michigan for the deathblow. There's little chance Michigan won't vote Romney since they made his father governor.

I'm sure they'll be reminded of that fact in 30 second bursts every time they turn on the television.

Between now and the Jan. 31 Florida primary, we will hear a furious, frenzied response from the Republican establishment. Team Romney has already spent $7 million on TV ads there-Team Gingrich just $800. Not $800,000. Just 800 bucks.

What does $800 buy you in advertising? Four seconds of public access TV?

Some people thought GWB was a joke candidate back in '00, you know.

Of course, Newt doesn't have a brother who is the governor of an Electoral Vote-rich state to help him along, but
GWB got awfully close even without the connivance in Florida.

The Intrade markets have Obama with a 55% chance of winning the election, but strong likelihoods that the Senate and the House will be GOP-controlled. They also have Mittens with a 73% chance of winning the GOP nom.

As Romney's probability of winning the nom goes down, Obama's prob of winning the general will go up.

I don't think it matters. all of the GOP potentials are f*cking insane, not to mention that the GOP is right now running around sabotaging the middle class (and doing it IN PUBLIC). the election rolls around and the GOP is gonna find out that full boat crazy plus f*cking over the middle class means they were done before they even got out of bed that morning.

Roemer's in the race still. I cast mine for the guy I think will actually do a good job. My second choice, he isn't getting too far, but the "front runners" are absolutely not getting my vote for anything; not Primary and for damn sure not the actual election.

2012-01-22 04:06:30 PM
Advertising dollars or no, Newt has some good numbers in Florida. Back when he peaked in late November, 45.8% of Republicans backed him. More than Romney ever had.

The numbers are worse than that now, but it's far easier work to convince people to vote for you if they at one point wanted to vote for you. Especially if you've got momentum.

The not-Romney crowd finally found something they can back - angry white guy. Note Romney's win percent - 28%. He polled around 25% for months, suggesting that's his core group and everyone else just came along with the winner. They seem willing to ignore anything that would make them dislike Gingrich too - exit polls showed the allegations from his ex-wife were largely dismissed by his voters.

If not-Romney has found someone they can be willing to stick their fingers in their ears for and go LALALA for the rest of the primaries, this is a race now. It certainly made Florida matter a great deal. If Romney gets anything more than a couple of percent win in Florida, he wins no question. If Gingrich gets rid of that 20 point deficit he had in the polls there from more than a week ago - the most recent - or even wins, then not-Romney has found their man and we have a race. The question is can Gingrich's barely-existent organization survive the month of boring.

I think the question is will Gingrich hold on from imploding his own campaign before the Convention?

The man doesn't want to be President. That is work, and work is not to his liking. He is a petulant child who wants to be get picked for the kickball team, but damned if he's going to run or catch or anything all sweaty...

The best thing Gingrich can do is to convince Santorum to drop out, and run together as a ticket. I think they could probably win the primaries like that.

I dunno. I still think he wants the same thing that Palin wanted: to be a Kingmaker. Not a King, himself. He covets the Rove role, only without the actual work that Rove puts in. I got a gut feeling that something will knock him out of the race, just in time to put an endorsement for the "right" man for the job during the Convention. Then he can get credit for "making" the candidate viable.

Certainly better for Obama but at this point, it is even helping Obama against a Romney nomination.

They lobbying thing hasn't completely played itself out yet. Last time I heard, Gingrich was given permission to share the details of his consulting contracts which he hasn't done yet. However, I do expect enough media fodder regarding the taxes to truly sink Romney.
