Because the country of Texas won't have Texas Education Agency standards to worry about anymore?

Why the hell does it cost 50 grand to have sports?

2012-01-22 09:31:27 AM
Cancelling sports in Texas? They might as well go around proclaiming they're atheists for the reaction that's going to get there.

eddyatwork: Why the hell does it cost 50 grand to have sports?

Transportation, equipment, coach salary, etc. If anything, $50,000 is kind of on the low end of the estimates I would make.

They can't get rid of the coaches as most coaches also teach, and the gym didn't go away either, just won't be used as much. The $50,000 is probably mostly facility costs and transportation.

And yes, the local public reaction isn't going to be pretty. Texans do tend to take their local school sports a bit too serious sometimes. Here at a 4A school, we've had parents kicked out of 7th grade basketball games for getting too rowdy, yelling at the coaches and refs, etc.

cancel student sports and use the money for improving education

Maybe they are learning something after all.

2012-01-22 10:03:28 AM
And while many schools and districts over emphasize sports.... getting rid of them is an extreme as well.... just as totally getting rid of music or other things that aren't the "three R's" in a school are.

And I agree, 50 grand to run ALL of the sports a typical school has (usually 6-7 sports each for boys and girls) actually seems extremely low.

This. Premont's not exactly some suburb of Houston with a couple hundred schools to play against; it's halfway between Corpus Christi and Laredo in the middle of relative nowhere. Their transportation costs must be ridiculous.

Pfft. When they secede they will keep sports, cancel the science programs, and use the money to fund Baptist chapels in every public school.

Maybe parents will spend some of that energy getting their kids to actually study and learn things, so that the school's record improves. Then if they are successful, they can have their football back.

He says the district should save $50,000 this spring by dropping sports and using the money for two new science labs.

Science? Texas? Jesus will have none of that nonsense!

No shiat. Buy each school a few dozen of these:

Or hell, hire more teachers like Deborah Lafave. That'll get the little bastards to do some cardio.

They should introduce Khan Academy (new window) into their classrooms. Their academic performance would shoot through the roof.

2012-01-22 11:52:30 AM
From TFA: will start following the end of the basketball season.

While I recognize that this is likely because money has already been spent and contracts in place for things like transportation and coaches salaries, it still sends the wrong message.

If this school were truly committed to turning itself around educationally, they would have cancelled all sports immediately and redirected whatever committed resources they could to extra tutoring or something.

They'll just end up wasting all the extra cash on capital punishment anyway. This IS Texas after all.

Don't get rid of sports, just stop funding it through the school's budget and stop doing it during normal school hours. It should be after school and it should be paid for 100% by the participants.

They will then be declared terrorists and blown off the face of the earth, with a reminder to the rest of the South to not even try.

I bet donations start rolling in now.

Had they asked for donations for two new labs they would have been called socialists though.

And if there is a .1% chance per mile that Maria will be shot by a redneck landowner, what are her chances of making it long enough to die of dehydration?

LOL XD

I suspect it depends on what part of Texas you're in.
Austin seems like a cool place. They worship Stevie Ray over Jesus. OTOH, my friend stayed overnight at a tiny town in SE Texas during a cross-country trip and confirmed that basically everyone in the town had a truck with a gunrack and didn't like black people.

I couldn't give an exact number from my head, but schools here literally spend MILLIONS on stadiums. Academically, they're not so great, but this isn't what people care about. Practically every man woman and child is frothing at the mouth over every high school football game, though. THAT's what counts.

Also, the schools often have daycare for student's kids in their budgets. This was an eye opener for me.

Sports are important to a warmongering nation where the plutocrats encourage tribal animosities to distract the plebes and divide them so they won't unite against them the plutocrats

So no. They will fund sports if it means they have to sell the library books on eBay

I wouldn't mind. My brother and his family live in Texas. Whenever my three nieces grin at the camera for their annual Xmas card photo, they look like something from out of a Call of Cthulhu supplement (my sister-in-law used to call her father a "shark"-I believe it). Everybody would be better off.

Seriously though, cancel sports at a Texas school? That's like Martin Luther nailing the the Ninety-Five Theses on that church's front door. But then even my rightwing wingnut brother has had it with schools in Texas. My nieces are going to college in Liberal Socialist France because they're light years ahead of Texas and they're cheaper.

Canceling sports is a step in the right direction but it looks like there are far bigger problems in the district.

This announcement to parents that the high school didn't meet improvement goals has a misspelling.
