Mom and dad? How the hell old are you, Submitter? I think that might even be too early for my grandparents...

Well, yet another link I can't get to from Germany.

Of course, Germans don't generally use submarines for racing, so I guess I'm good here.

Sam Cooke was born in '31. He didn't start making music until the 50s. He continued making music up to his untimely death in the mid 60s. His songs were played (and very popular) throughout the 70s and 80s. Cook remains popular today.

Cooke is one of my all-time favorites. His death is pretty (tragically) fascinating if you dig into the official story and then into what some folks think really happened.

Or you could go with this one (new window).

Tough to pick a favorite Sam Cooke song, but the melody and his voice in Cupid is as good as it gets.

Well, three talents out of four. Cooke was just magic, though I tend to prefer Sam and Dave most of the time.

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone other than my dad used the expression watch the submarine races.

Yes it does. But would you say untimely death when talking about Abraham Lincoln or murder? Untimely death would lead one to think that he died of natural causes or in an accident.

Very nice, Subby. What a beautiful voice. I'll be humming that all day, now. Kinda creepy that you're probably right, but thanks for the afternoon uplift, anyway.

Based on my posts, you should be able to tell that I have no problem with using untimely death for one who was murdered at a youngish age. The fact that Sam Cook died before his time is tragic. The method of his death is less important than the fact that his life was cut short, at least to me. On the other hand, if you want to use murder in your posts, I won't correct you.

That would be dickish.

/And, yes, the fact that Lincoln's death was untimely is more important than the fact that he was murdered. That is because his life was important, more important than the way it ended.

I bought some Sam Cooke cassettes when Sam the Record Man was having a sale. They went out of business not long after, so maybe it was a going-out-of-business sale.

Everything old is new again on the web.

That song: popular in 1957.
My grandparents: Married 1960.
My mom: born 1961.

They might have been listening to it but it was an oldie.

If the rumors of his last day is true, then he's scum, though i do like his Change is Gonna Come song when they used it in Spike Lee's Malcolm X movie.

Actually, i retract what i just said... Sounds like the poor guy was robbed, and they made it look like HE was the bad guy.
