FTA: They were demanding a $310,300 ransom, the report said.

That is an oddly specific amount.

They probably wanted Nigerian money: Roughly 50 million Nigerian Naira

The $10,300 is for my new PC. Their new PC I mean.

Maybe it was all they needed.

They actually meant $310 or $300 but because of their light grasp of the English language and horrible typing it came out as $310,300.

We should take down their entire Internet backbone with a few hundred dozen 2-ton bombs to prevent further kidnappings.

It's an easy way of determining whether the technical specifications of ransom contract had been thoroughly read (and complied with). No $300 = bombing

Not all of these cries for help are scam, just most. I received a letter from a member of Muhammadu Buhari's part. Buhari is the leader of the main opposition party in Nigeria. The ruling party had kidnapped several of Buhari's cabinet members and was threatening to seize their assets. They had to get all of their cash out of the country quickly, so they went to the extreme lengths of mass e-mailing American citizens that they located via Match.com. They were not so much interested in protecting their wealth as keeping it from falling into the ruling party's coffers.

I was skeptical, so I opened up a new account with a few dollars and sent them the routing information. A week later, the balance was over $35 million (USD). Sometimes you just have to trust people, even if every atom in your body is screaming "NO!" Best risk I ever took.

$300 for the briefcase. $10,000 as a "convienence fee" for the hassle of having to kidnap the guy in the first place.

I think that you could dicker them down to twenty bucks and a bottle of Night Train.

FTA: "We have been advised to stay quiet about this thing in order to avoid any further complications for my brother," he responded by email.

Greg Ock's daughter, Stacey Ock, began a string of Facebook postings Friday afternoon, saying, "My daddy is in Nigeria ... he has been kidnapped ... pray as hard as you can for my daddy."

So apart from the whole contacting the media thing. And apart from letting his daughter run amok on Facebook thing.

Keeping it totally quiet. Shhhhh.

Complications. Shhhhh.

Must avoid.

GODAMMIT! I feel so much shame that I missed that. That is a bread and butter pun, only bested by Mike Hunt. Shame shame shame. I lose much face and am a disgrace to my family.

The most troubling part of this story to me is that it seems to have all it's "facts" come from facebook postings.

Convenience fee? So Ticketmaster running this. I knew they were evil bastards!

Mr. Burns: And to think, Smithers, you laughed when I bought Ticketmaster. [imitating Smithers] "Nobody's going to pay a 100% service charge".

Smithers: It's a policy that ensures a healthy mix of the rich and the ignorant, sir.

This is stuff just really pisses me off! Not because these people are sending out these emails, but because the US won't do anything about it. We need to HELP these people! It's obvious that they have good computer skills, so they can be employed in high end jobs. They are obviously creative and persuasive too.

These emaila are evidence of a cry for help and we continue to treat these people like criminals. There must be so much more we can do to help. I recommend that when people get these emails that they actually send them some money - not all the money that they ask for. When you send the money, ask them if there is a way you can help them out. Write to your local officials and tell them that you want their help to save these people.

He was in Nigeria. That was his first mistake.

Well, they do show more initiative than the lazy Americans who refuse to get jobs. Even if we don't bring them over here, we should help them to build an infrastructure over there.

Not enough if they are having to get money this way. They have a few hot spots, but they need more help. You people could just send a little money instead of making fun of them.
