Seeing as this was an intentional fire, that's probably what they want you to do.

It sounds like this was an intentional fire. My investigations would begin with the horse owners themselves. Any race horses involved? Competition horses? Do you know of anyone who would want to cause you "x"?

I grew up on a ranch and this is not the first time I've heard about a barn being burned to the ground intentionally.

Subby is retarded. If you burn a completely dried out horse, the thermal output is about 8.2mega therms.

Yeah, but usually they don't kill other people's horses when they do it. The insurance is going to take all the profit out of the arson. Those are some pricey animals.

No insurance? OK, that's just silly. What if there was an accident.

Sorry for your sister's horse. It's not a nice way for a horse to die.

Oh geez, I knew this would be a barnfire when I saw the headline. How awful. I can't help but imagine all the poor horses screaming and dying in terror, with no way out. Has anyone else ever read Black Beauty?
I think a barnfire is one of the more awful things that can happen.
As a previous poster said, probably not a whole lot of insurance, not that the money is what it is all about here.
So terribly sad.

As am I, but I guess I follow state politics a bit more.

Random idea, bro:

Why don't they have the doors in these barns tied to the smoke/fire-detection system, so that if the heat gets above a certain value, and/or the smoke values get above X density, the doors to the stalls and the structure open automatically? Yes, it would be chaos, but in a huge-ass barn that doesn't have anyone on fire-watch, better than dying in a fire.

Got the idea from an unrelated topic: Most big-city police departments' K9 cruisers are outfitted with packages for when they leave the dogs in the car with the A/C running...if the temp in the car rises above a certain level, the system automatically rolls down all four windows part-way to allow fresh air.

The horses won't leave. They're frightened, and won't go outside of their loose-boxes, even if the damn thing is on fire. Truly, they aren't very smart.
Have you ever heard of great rescues from barn fires? People risk their lives to get the idiot horses out. They blindfold them so the horses can't see the conflagration.
I can't remember her name, but there is a lady that died trying to save her horses from a barn fire, and there is a prestigious horse show award named after her in Australia.
I've looked up llewellyn and galloway. Neither are right. Can anyone provide the name?

Have you heard of the phrase "horse running into a burning barn"?

Horses don't think like people. They tend to retreat to a place of safety, and their 1st place of safety tends to be their home stall that is on fire. Your solution makes perfect sense except it doesn't account for the horse's decision making process when under stress.

2012-01-22 03:23:46 AM
Automatic doors tied to smoke detectors. And lots of them! Smoke detector goes off it gives a certain amount of time to cancel the alarm. If not canceled it automatically opens up the gates on each stall and opens up every door leading out. Sure, it will cost a ton of money, but well worth the price if you ask me.

I'm surprised there aren't more competition horse barn fires.

Race horses are all born at the best time of year for their class which is usually winter. Young horses are kept warm. Horses usually eat combustable hay. Barns are heated, especially during very cold snaps, where it's especially difficult to get to during snow storms. Flaws in heating systems show up during very cold weather.

Who among us hasn't said, "Gee it's going to be the coldest night of the year. I guess I'll sleep in a freezing, drafty barn where there'll be no one to help if all hell breaks loose."

How very sad.

2012-01-22 04:59:13 AM
I can't say I feel glad about horses dying, but I don't feel bad either. I don't like horses. I worked a job that made horse care products one summer that was in a barn with several horses. They seemed like the goddamn dumbest mammals ever to grace the Earth. They were 'spooked' by empty boxes left out by the garbage collection area. Anyone who tells you they are intelligent is projecting onto the animal. They're not, they're damn dumb, that's why they let people ride them. And I have absolutely no problem with them being slaughtered and sold for meat. There, I think I probably pissed off every horse owner on here, and I'm glad. They're incredibly stupid animals, they won't run out of a burning barn. I look at a horse, and I see potential meat, just like when I see a cow or a deer.

On the other hand, when I look at a crocodile or alligator I see a beautiful animal that's been honed to predatory perfection over tens of millions of years. I don't think they're intelligent, but I'd be more sad to see a crocodile die than a horse.

I wonder if we could do a horseyday in the memory of these horses. My daughter would love it.

I was impressed when I saw a video of a guy "breaking in" a horse without just throwing on a saddle and riding the animal like they do in rodeos. Basically the guy patiently reasoned with the horse to accept the saddle than rider without bucking. The description said it was part of a competion to see who could ride their given horse with ease. Looked boring, yet to me was very cool.

I can about guarantee it was on purpose. Horse people are NUTS. Out of pure jealousy or... just plain craziness, they will steal/dismember, make up an entire life (and death) story, cut girths (in such a way that it wouldn't snap until the worst possible moment - like midair over a 5' jump), poison, and yes set barns on fire.

There are hundreds of 'petty' things that go on at barns too. Ridiculous rumors, cutting tails off horses, 'accidentally' leaving stall/gate latches open, throwing expensive leather tack in water, tossing 'performance drugs' into the feed buckets of horses just before they go to a show where drug testing is done... the list goes on and on. These people don't seem to care who or what they harm in their efforts.

This is why I stopped showing looooong ago and keep my horses in a place where there are hardly any other people (and even then some crazy drama goes on). I have no idea why so many crazy people are attracted to horse stuff, but yeah...

A lot of trainers start the handling process around birth and introduce tack about a year in. I didn't get on the last colt until he was three, but it was a piece of cake because all the prep work was done beforehand.

SOP for the mob and has been for years. there are huge scams when it comes to horses. similar stuff with dogs.

horses are an expensive animal that is all but worthless. people will pay high dollar for a "race" horse or a show horse, even if the person selling it to them just got an old nag for $100. horses aren't rare and there are many many that get abandoned. should tell you about their expense and worth on the market.

My condolences to the owners. Losing a pet horse is just like losing any other loved pet. Or like losing a child. It's devastating.

As for the Haters, horses are *very* intelligent at being horses. They spook because they are a meal for predators in the wild. So yes, they are cautious, and yes, they react quickly and instinctively. It tends to save their asses in the wild.

Did you know when they jump a wall or fence they can't even see it when the take off? Their heads are far ahead of their feet. They have to remember where the fence was, how high, and move their bodies and legs to clear the jump. Once you get to really know a horse, you can see the intelligence. It's a little too subtle for you low brows to detect.

Horses are noble creatures, who can attack and kill humans if they wish, but instead serve us loyally. They amplify us. Our human intelligence and wisdom, linked to their power and speed, forming a composite creature far greater tan the sum of the parts.

Damm straight I'm putting smoke detector triggered back doors on my horses' stalls in the barn I'm building next year. A metal barn. BTW, they WILL run away from a fire right next to them.

I agree.

The question really is going to be is this and insurance matter, or suppression of competition.

This is one of my biggest worries. I live next to a bunch of meth-heads, and my barn is right next to their property. Seeing as the barn's full of shavings, hay, 200-year-old wood, and other lovely flammables, it wouldn't take much if they wanted to retaliate for reporting them to the Sheriff.
