ultraholland: I'd sure like to make it out there some day.

It's very, very pretty, but incredibly crowded. Go in the spring before the kids get out of school and while the waterfalls are at their peak.

Yosemite has a lifetime of adventures in a very small space.

Crowds only exist on the trails. Step 100 m away and you'll be totally alone on 4th of July weekend.

/Best way to see the park is from a portaledge.

Depends on the year. It can start snowing in October and get rather unpleasantly cold. I'm a big fan of early September. Not so many mosquitos. less crowds. I absolutely love spending half a week or a week up at Sunrise lakes and going on day hikes when I need to get away but don't feel super adventurous. It's a good spot to go relax.

It's phenomenal. Nothing like it IMO. Problem is there is so much to go see. It's hard to really get it all in in one trip, short of a two week backpacking trip with no rest days. It's big and so much is worth taking the time to see.

I once took a flight back home from Reno (into San Jose) and they flew right over the valley. It was breathtaking and such a cool view of all the places I'm used to seeing on foot. SOoooooooooooooooo cool.

I've lived in California my whole life and have never been there.

Never been to Yosemite, but if its anything like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon (which I have been to, both places) the time I was there was incredibly short and felt like I should have spent a month at each location just to see everything I wanted.

I have been to King's Canyon which was farking incredible as well.

I'm thinking my next trip is to see the Badlands. Not entirely sure yet. Suggestions would be welcomed.

The United States has some pretty incredible places to visit.

I've hiked Yosemite several times, but have always avoided the places mentioned in tourist guides (i.e. driving into the valley on Hwy 140). If you do a backcountry hike, you'll experience the same spectacular scenery and maybe run into a handful of people all day.

I've been to Yosemite (several times on backpacking trips), Yellowstone (once for 3-4 days) and the Grand Canyon (way too many times to show friends and family visiting from out of state/country).
Imo, nothing comes close to Yosemite. After having been there a few times, Yellowstone (to me) was a let down, but maybe we all have different things to look for that make a visit special, I guess.

Another spectacular place: Jasper/Banff National Parks in Alberta. Canadian bonus: the park rangers up there seem way more relaxed than their US counterparts.

Took a trip there last fall and while outside/around of the park was nice, the park itself seemed like nothing but a way to funnel money to the "Tribe" that runs it. The CA federal park system was also pretty shiatty and unprofessional. Called them to find out information, camping, closures ect and it transferred you to some office in Washington DC that was no help what so ever. I'm not even sure if the dope on the phone knew were CA was, let alone anything about the parks. We were finally told camping was open in Mariposa Grove, only to trek up there after dark and find every gate locked plus road work and closures. Nothing like a 100 mile round trip in the dark. Apparently you can not contact a ranger unless there's an emergency.

Yellowstone, by contrast, was heaven and professional.

Alright, is it just me or was that video shot with a camera??. I hit the pause until the whole video downloaded and I was still jumpy..

Sounds like failure to plan ahead. And what the hell is the CA federal park system?

I agree unless you want to hike above 8800ft. Got skunked twice by snow.

So much fail in this statement. You sound like an idiot with zero planning skills. Plenty of people go there multiple times a year with no problem. And what "tribe" are you talking about running the place? Yosemite isn't an indian casino.

Whatever we had to deal with in Washington DC from CA. It was different. IE a generic touchtone directory with a hidden option to actually get a hold of someone, who could answer questions, but then couldn't help one bit. Trust me, compared to the park systems in AZ and WY/MT it was... interesting. And very different from what we had experienced otherwise. The girl at the gate at Yosemite must have been 15, and seem genuinely surprised that we had questions when she was taking our cash and shoving a map in our face.

Not knocking the place, just the administration of it.

Yeah, we were on a cross country trip but it was the only state we had problems in traveling 9,000 miles. Most places you could get up to date campground information, talk to real people, and find out if there was road work or campsite closing rather easily through NPS.Gov or calling the park rangers info line. We were literally told the campsite were open and wouldn't be busy, but they were locked shut when we got there. We planned ahead, unfortunately we were given incorrect information. Ended up having to travel towards Bakersville and grabbing a motel.

Death Valley wasn't much better, but luckily there was more info on it on non-gov sites including information on camping.

I've only been to 2 National Parks. A trip to Carlsbad Caverns in '71 as a youngster. It was amazing.

And I live about 45 minutes from Acadia. Been there more times than I can count. Living on the coast and having visited so many times it's just kinda...neat. More than 'meh' but a ways from 'WOW!'

Would like to visit others someday.

That was my reaction to Acadia the only time I've been there. Maine is nice, and Acadia is nice, but there wasn't a "postcard moment" for me.

My favorite NP is Volcanoes NP in Hawaii. It's unlike anywhere else I've been.
