Wine has three purposes. You can either turn it into brandy, vinegar or cook with it. OK, so it also pisses off the church going prudes.

A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Chilean table wines. This is a pity as many fine Chilean wines appeal not only to the Chilean palate but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain.

Tierra Amarilla Bordeaux is rightly praised as a peppermint flavoured Burgundy, whilst a good San Pedro Syrup can rank with any of the world's best sugary wines.

Château Azul, too, has won many prizes; not least for its taste, and its lingering afterburn.

El Muerto 1968 has been compared favourably to a Welsh claret, whilst the Chilean Wino Society thoroughly recommends a 1970 Coq du Luis Ayala, which, believe me, has a kick on it like a burro: eight bottles of this and you're really finished. At the opening of the Santiago Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the Mapocho River every half an hour.

Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is El Paqui Pink. This is a bottle with a message in, and the message is 'cuidado'. This is not a wine for drinking, this is a wine for laying down and avoiding.

Another good fighting wine is Quinta de Tilcoco Old-and-Yellow, which is particularly heavy and should be used only for hand-to-hand combat.

Quite the reverse is true of Château Guacarear, which is an appellation contrôlée, specially grown for those keen on regurgitation; a fine wine which really opens up the sluices at both ends.

Real emetic fans will also go for a Ovalle Muddy, and a prize winning Cuivre Reserve Centro Astrononomica San Tagua Tagua, which has a bouquet like an Mapuche's armpit.

As someone who, at the age of 53 is just starting to drink wine, I am amazed at the variety available. Your pics show a stock almost as large as my closest liquor store. Which is why I travel 10 miles to a bigger one.

I am going through wine listings and buying the best rated that are under $30 a bottle. I figure I can learn what other people consider to be good wine and then start making my onw judgements.

Drinking a De Loach Pinot Noir 2009 tonight. And it is some tasty stuff.

You need to find a larger/better liquor store. :0

I'll look at both reviews and prices. You can pick up what reviewers know what they're talking about. Hell, a lot of times there's not much point in even looking at prices above 15; look at reviews from a single source (like wine spectator) and the ratings vs. price. Going from an eight dollar wine to 15 might see you go from 89 to 92 points; going from 15 to 30 might see a 92 point wine turn into a 94.

Really not worth the extra money for minor difference in quality.

Drinking a 2007 merlot from Cali's north coast.

Yeah, that's what I gather, which is why I limit it to $30. Most I have been buying are between $15-20. Though my budget will not sustain that for long, so I will start concentrating on the $8-15 range next. The few I have tried there have been perfectly OK as far as I can tell.

But just learning will be fun. If somewhat...blurry.

There is a large local chain that has a very good selection, and I can order online for pickup, though I have not tried that yet.

I generally go between 8 and 20, depending on the reviews/if I have had anything by the winery. The liquor chain down here in Texas, Specs, is pretty good at posting short reviews and point ratings for a lot of their wines.

As Koala pointed out, I'm also a big Cameron Hughes fan. VERY good store (www.chwine.com). Free shipping and due to the nature of their business, much higher quality wines then their prices indicate. And their meritages are awesome.

I am using a local chain called Bottle King (new window). They have what looks like an impressive selection, including a locked case with bottles priced in the $100's of dollars. I plan to attend a few of their wine tastings, as well as a few at some other stores not too far away.

I had to look up 'Meritage', so something else to add to my 'to try' list/

Learning is fun!

Bottle King was a good chain. Another good Jersey chain, if you have one near you, is Super Saver. Went to the one in Bridgewater and the one south of Lebanon a lot.

Wikipedia is a good place for general grape and wine knowledge; tend to look up any unfamilar word. Meritage is basically a non-French bourdeux. Just a blend of wines.

"improve" is subjective, but it does make an effect. I've had some Malbec that as soon as a drank it, i got the distinct taste of limestone. Sure enough, as i read the bottle, it says how its grown at the foothills of the mountains in very rocky soil.

Now, im just an amateur oenophile, but i was able to nail that one right away.

What the hell are the Swiss worried about so much?

J. Frank Parnell: What the hell are the Swiss worried about so much?

Well, WWII raged in all the countries that surround them (Austria, Germany, France, and Italy), they hold a strategic position for trans-Europe transit, and the Russians were thinking of nuking the crap out of Europe if things came to that. Makes a bit of sense to me.

That, and the Swiss are really big on preparedness in general. When I moved here the city government gave my wife and I packets of potassium iodide in case the nuclear power plant a few miles away went "pop". Military service is compulsory, and most soldiers keep their service rifle and ammo at home for much of their adult life.

They're neutral but prickly, which is how they've stayed neutral over the years.
