Your new front-runner is one of your old front runners, Newt Gingrich. I would like to take a moment to revel: I cannot personally tell you how pleased I am to see old Newt rise to the top after listening to all of your nauseating, sickening lectures on the evils of government and the importance of family values.

Beautiful.

Because someone else spend nearly 8 years building a mile-high shiat sandwich, and stuck the next administration with the tab?

NEWSFLASH: Economic and electoral cycles do not coincide!

I guess the unemployment rate dropping a full point in the past four months has nothing to do with Obama, but sh*t that happened in 2008 is his fault, right?

Mr. Carville, let me break it to you gently; a first class Republican disaster has the potential of defeating the incumbent Democrat President.

Where were you when G.W. Bush doubled the national debt during a time of economic prosperity?

Where you when Bush started a fake war which cost the American taxpayer over a trillion dollars?

Where were you in 2008 when the economy collapsed after 8 years of a tax reducing, anti-regulatory republican in the white house?

Where were you when we were losing 10's of thousands of jobs per month BEFORE Bush left office?

Where were you when the TeaParty asked American corporate leaders to not hire new employees until Obama is out of the White House?

Where were you when Republicans have blocked absolutely every effort to create jobs unless it's tied to a cut in taxes for the wealthy?

Where were you when the GOP has routinely placed tax cuts for the wealthy above creating jobs?

So where the hell have you been?

Cmon, there isn't a republican candidate colbert couldn't take down in a day, much less the machine Obama has.

The only way this turns into a disaster is if Romney or Gingrich (assuming those two stay front runners) attack each other ideologically -- or if for some reason Paul, who really is ideologically different, gains a lot of traction into the primaries. That's the kind of thing that breaks parties.

If they just have a good drag down fight (but still largely agree on policy), it will only energize the Republican base into being invested into the election and the candidates the way Clinton/Obama did in 2008.

I like nothing about this 24/7 free publicity in the media for the GOP.

Problem is, attacking Romney on policy is nailing jello to the wall. Paul's ideas have the virtue of never actually being implemented by congress. Gingrich is just a sociopath, so if that's what the country wants, so be it.

cameroncrazy1984: I guess the unemployment rate dropping a full point in the past four months has nothing to do with Obama, but sh*t that happened in 2008 is his fault, right?

Correct. The economy is so mind-blowingly complex, its foolish to pin anything on one decision, person, or administration.

Stuff that went down in 2002 affects us today. Stuff that went down in 1992 affected us in 2002.

There's no single "cycle" to economics.

Some actions create an immediate effect. Some create an effect far into the future. Most of these do both.

People in this country don't really belong to political parties anymore, they're just team fans now. Fans will cheer for their team if they're awesome or if they suck. If the Red Sox went back to being cellar dwellers, their die-hard fans wouldn't suddenly start cheering for the Yankees, and vice versa. The actual ability to govern the country has nothing to do with the fan base loyalty. They will stop showing up for the games though. A lot of die hard Republican fans that I know are telling me they're sitting out the 2012 election.

It'll be up to the independents again, the casual fans of the sport, and whether or not they feel motivated to go to the game.

If you did a pop up of Callista half way through that, it would be worse than those "scare videos" that were so popular. Yikes!

lohphat: What's worse, the crop of GOP candidates or that there's a significant number of voters they look attractive to?

Just remember: toward the end of his presidency, George W. Bush has a 30% approval rating.

That means that almost 1/3 of people surveyed thought he was doing a great job.

These are the same people who are trying to decide between the GOP crop.

Normally I'd agree with you, but...Look, Just go read FreeRepublic. The base is a MESS right now. Freep's dictators have issued the word that the Site is NOT going to let Romney be the nominee and therefore they are foursquare behind Gingrich, the problem with that being that the Truebelievers have taken to asking impertinent questions like "why are we rallying behind the thrice divorced womanizer rather than a TRUE conservative like Santorum? and then they are promptly banned (or "zotted" in the local parlance) from posting on the site.

It's going to be even uglier when Mitt wins and the sites mods demand that all the same people they've been whipping up into a "Two minute hate"-like frenzy against Mitt, now swear fealty to him and say he the bestest Republican conservative ever, and ban anyone who says bad things about him (This really happens there, it did last election cycle with McCain-I saw it with my own eyes)

They've not been bad, really. Things have refrained from getting worse, have gotten a fair bit better in money and jobs terms, and have gotten massively better in accounting terms, with many of the old off-the-books expenses now accounted for and thus subject to budgetary belt-tightening.

I mean, I've had better decades in money terms I guess, but at least Ska isn't a thing any longer. If we're arbitrarily giving the president blame/credit for everything that happens in the universe, then Obama is my farking hero for that alone.
