Um...good luck with that. There is that pesky reciprocity thing between states.

So, do they let the 22-year-old trophy wife married to the 80-year-old millionaire get a membership?

But they'd accept Kim Kardashian and [INSERT CURRENT HUSBAND'S NAME HERE] with open arms, right?

Ohio doesn't have to recognize D.C. marriages, thanks to DoMA's second clause. And before you go all "bu-bu-but full faith & credit," DoMA's second clause explicitly addresses the FF&C clause, and is arguably constitutional on that ground.

/third clause is clearly unconstitutional
//second clause is a tougher argument, because Congress explicitly has the power to define the effect of the FF&C clause.

Because civil rights are derived by her reading of a book about the travails of a semi-nomadic middle eastern tribe.

I'm not ok with that.

To be fair, you run a gym, you'd think that you'd want a few hard bodied guys around who had no interest in the gals. Some eye candy for the ladies, without any chance of competition. It's sort of win-win.

Am I really the only one getting tired of veterans trying to use their past "service" for special treatment all the time? I agree that the gym seems to be in the wrong here, but the fact that one of these guys is a veteran doesn't mean that it is somehow more wrong to do it to him than to someone else.

I get your point, but asking not to be discriminated against because of your gender is hardly asking for special treatment.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: I get your point, but asking not to be discriminated against because of your gender is hardly asking for special treatment.

That wasn't what I was saying though. I agreed that the gym is in the wrong. It would also be wrong if they were doing it to someone who has never served in the military. Insinuating that it is somehow worse to infringe on the rights of a veteran than someone who is not a veteran is what I have a problem with; it has nothing to do with the specific argument in this story.

The reason why veteran status is always brought up in situations such as these is because of the hero-worship for troops in this country for "protecting our rights." That's relevant to a lot of people. What I appreciate about it's presence in this article and situation is that it paints the homophobes into a slightly smaller corner, makes their discrimination look more ridiculous than it normally would, and causes X number of people to take two steps back from that sort of position.

Yes they do have the power to define the effect of the FF&C clause...... It's called a Constitutional Amendment. What they cannot do is change parts of the constitution in regular laws. They have to Amend the Constitution in order to do so, which is spelled out In the Constitution.

No it doesn't, because federal law does not trump the constitution, even if if claims to.

The policy states that it recognizes marriage "according to the state of Ohio." But what's in it for the gym? Saving a few hundred bucks from two guys who have been member for years? I'm surprised a rival gym hasn't stepped forward to invite them in with a family membership.

The natatorium's spousal policy adheres to Ohio state law, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Crappy situation, but don't blame the gym because you live in a bigoted shiathole.

Why do veterans always bring up veteran status when they are discriminated against, especially in places like Ohio? I understand that they would be really pissed that after serving their country, fighting for democracy in other countries, that they are denied it here. But they also got to understand that unless they walk lock in step with the Right Wing ideology and conform to the Right's morality that their veteran status doesn't mean shiat to those people. The only veterans they support are the ones that agree with them and all others can die. I wouldn't be surprised if some Right Wingers start commenting on this guys veteran status by saying something like the only reason why he joined the military was for the "free money for school".

2012-01-21 07:45:02 PM
Cuyahoga Falls Mayor Don Robart says he thinks the natatorium has a fair policy. He says until the Ohio state law changes the definition of marriage, the natatorium will not either.

Lemme guess: Don Robart is a social conservative shiatbag?

And they are not saying that the government should come in to shut them down. They are however attempting to enlighten the community about the discrimination so folks who live nearby might say, drop their memberships and move to another business that does not do crap like this? If I was going to that gym I would at least. Write it down on that little comment card they give you and the like.

Weird how business works you know?

Hate to sound like im stereotyping here because I'm firmly against sterotyping but a gym discriminating against gays? Thats bad business. I mean all those gay dudes do is work out. Thats like refusing to sell liquor to Irishmen or refusing to sell confederate flags to rednecks. I'd go so far as to say its like not allowing blacks into your rims/grillz/fried chicken store.

They can join the Akron YMCA with a family membership. That's right, the Young Men's Christian Association allows same-sex couples to join with a family membership.

While the business in this state doesn't have recognize their marriage - that can't discriminate on basis of religion, sex etc. So - "their business their rules" is completely wrong. They have to follow rules.

/oh - btw - you and this business are complete assholes

Gay folks, especially older ones who have had to deal with this nonsense for awhile..

Just remember: it will get better. Because my generation generally doesn't care if you get married or not.

Hopefully that stays the same, but yep. I personally just can't get the anti gay marriage vitriol. At all. Since I'm pretty sure it's an irrational fear anyway, I'm okay with that, but still frustrated when friends move to states or countries where their union is recognized.

In due time.
