Wow, I read that as "Buzzard halts search for missing people on Mt. Rainier..."

/Though if you start to see buzzards, it's probably time to call off the search.

2012-01-21 12:22:48 PM
Just like Blizzard, causing delays.

2012-01-21 12:24:22 PM
The hell with those people, just finish Diablo 3 dammit.

2012-01-21 12:37:07 PM
Yeah. I was going to help look for those missing people, then I took an arrow to the knee.

2012-01-21 12:38:57 PM
I'm sure they'll be rescued Soon™.

"Blizzard" is the name of a video game company. It's also a word used to describe a severe snowstorm.

Thanks, cause I had no idea what the headline meant.

Wish the stranded well.

Long time listener, first time caller.
What is "raiding", and why would that necessitate a halt to the search?

Mount Ranier is a BAD place to be this week. The Cascades have been getting slammed for several days. The weather forecasts have been predicting snowfall in feet rather than in inches.

/it's oddly sunny in Portland today

2012-01-21 12:54:28 PM
The climbers were identified Friday as Sork "Erik" Yang, 52, of Springfield, Ore., and Jin Seol Hee, of Korea.

Something something Blizzard Starcraft.

My brother-in-law is friends of ine of the girls that's been missing. She's hiked the mountain before and when they started not hearing back ... Well, it's not been a good week.

Raiding is a big group nerd activity that is done in world of Warcraft. Most raiders shirked off most of their "real life" to enjoy this experience.

I can't figure out why they went up there at this time. I hope they are rescued but it doesn't seem real likely..

They don't call it "tempting fate" for nothing.

I'll be indoors playing video games.

I would guess either the search is a waste of time because the campers knew the risks of winter camping on a mountain and were well prepared for them, and are therefore fine and need no assistance, or the search is just a waste of time.

AbbeySomeone: rockradio1: What absolute covey of DUMBASSES go on to Mt. Ranier in the middle of WINTER?

Snow campers.

Lots of people do. As was said, snow campers, but also backcountry skiers, snowshoers, and winter hikers. It's generally safe, provided you have the proper equipment, notify people of where you are going, and use common sense.

That being said, going into the high Cascades THIS week defies common sense. The entire Pacific Northwest just got slammed, and when those fronts hit the mountain range, it turns into large amounts of snow, wind, and low temperatures. We all knew days ahead of time that this was coming.

Not at all.

Blizzard, the video game company, constantly flip-flops its development focus between enabling 'casual play' and enabling 'raiding play'. It is a typical thing for game-company Blizzard to do, much as halting searches is a typical thing for snow-type Blizzards to do.

Around here, when the weather reports even hint that bad weather is possible, the loons clean out the stores and the news reports start looking for icy patches to film. We think we're all bad and brave for facing down half inch of ice while the schools all shut down.

I'm pretty sure news reports up there have been warning about this for days, so my thoughts are with the rescuers having to go out in it. More so than the ones who went out in it looking for thrills.

2012-01-21 01:53:31 PM
Maybe if it was rainier instead of snowier, they could've continued

I am confused by this. Esp when the searchers die trying to rescue the people too dumb to avoid getting lost/trapped in the first place. (yes, yes, I know all about rapidly changing weather, blah blah blah blah)

but in the end, if you waited for late spring/summer you would be able to recover the remains at no risk to addition humans. Humans who might actually have lives worth not risking.

Sorry mom, but if you are too dumb to be prepared, why should others risk life, limb and waste money saving you?

The Rainier queue was too long so they played some alts in the Alterac Mountains realm.

As someone who was stranded on Mt St. Helens for days because of a blizzard, my heart goes out to these people. My experience was the most terrifying of my life and I really hope they make it out okay (though it doesn't look like they will).

Thanks to the new LFR tool, a lot of us raiders no longer have to dedicate our time to a raiding schedule. These days, we shirk off our "real life" to spend time on Fark.

Sure. Casuals have lots of time, since they only play Wow a few hours a week.
