Remember that old Jesus story involving the woman who gave her only coin and that act being worth more than a rich man giving many times that amount? Yeah, the story's about understanding fractions and percents. What's 1/1000 of your money worth? Do you give that freely to any causes? A lot of us do. Some of us even exceed 1/10 every year. He can have some thanks when he makes a proportionally significant sacrifice.

I'm impressed by some of his other donations. 7.5 million for this? There are many things that money could have gone toward. I hear Bill Gates has a pretty effective philanthropic system he has put together...maybe money spent toward combating malaria, administering vaccines, teaching effective agricultural practices, molesting sea otters, providing clean drinking water, protecting wilderness areas, developing clean energy, the list goes on.
And before this gets started, because I've been in these threads before, I do donate money and yes, it is towards things more important than some phallic symbol made out of common igneous rock. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that granite is the most boring and pedestrian of the igneous rocks, and Real Americans should be making their monuments out of obsidian, kryptonite and adamantium.

I once gave $20 to the FOP because in my young naivety I thought the sticker might slightly modify an officers attitude to the positive during a traffic stop.
/ Proportionally the same amount of my net worth this guy gave.
// I was young and stupid.
/// I missed the money more, because I needed it for rent.

Meh, the guy is the front of The Carlyle Group. 1,100 employees, over 150 billion in assets under their management. The cash is probably being donated because the multi-billionare is sick of seeing scaffolding around the monument.

It's embarrassing that, in order to repair one of our classic & beloved national monuments, the richest & most powerful nation in the history of humanity has to go hat-in-hand, begging for charity from one of the parasite oligarchs who got fat feeding off the carrion of our once-mighty industrial base. All because the GOP is too cheap & stupid to cough up the money.
This is a sad day for America.

If there was only some way of collecting money from the entire population for things like this. We could call them taxes.

I think over his lifetime he has it covered and
on the whole the money he has donated to chariity was better spent than had he jsut give it to the governemnt in the form of taxes.
Just for 2010 he:
$2-million , to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
$5-million to support the National Symphony Orchestra
$1.5-million for an arts-education program for students in kindergarten through high school;
$200,000 for activities such as the Kennedy Center Honors awards and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and others.
$10-million to the University of Chicago Law School for full-tuition scholarships.
$5-million to the Library of Congress
$1-million to the Foundation for the National Archives, in Washington, to build a new display case for the Magna Carta, When H. Ross Perot put the Magna Carta document up for auction in 2007, Mr. Rubenstein bought it, wanting to ensure this copy-the only one in the United States, stayed in the country. He bought the document for $21.3-million at a Sotheby's auction and has lent it indefinitely to the National Archives.
$350,000 to the Economic Club of Washington
$170,000 to the D.C. Public Education Fund, in Washington
$128,000 to Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area

So what you are saying is Warren Buffet's paltry $49,000 extra he gave to the government was meaningless form over substance.

Hey, those foreigners aren't going to kill themselves you know. And don't forget about the subsidies that Monsanto and Exxon need, because they're poor. Maybe Washington can finally cut Public Television's funding and get the money for repairs.

Considering that a Federal government that takes in between $2-$3 TRILLION in revenue could not find $15 million to repair the monument to our greatest President I figure his donating $7.5 million out of his billiiions is a good thing.
