Cool squirrel story sis time:

My hubby and I were walking down the street one day and saw a baby squirrel chilling at the base of a tree. He was adorable so we slowly walked up to it. He didn't run away. So then gently my husband started petting it and eventually picked him up and started kept petting it. Baby squirrel was so happy. He clung on to my husband's sweater enjoying the petting and then started walking on his shoulders, the top of his head, etc. Of course all the people walking down the sidewalk crossed the street to avoid us but I don't care it was totally worth it. We were *this* close to taking him home but alas, squirrels are wild animals and I'm not even sure you can domesticate them.

I was over in London recently and while in St. James park (opposite Buckingham Palace) the squirrels were everywhere and crawling all over a lot of the visitors. Very friendly.

Gray squirrels, for example, have been known to eat insects, snails, bird eggs and animal carcasses when other food is scarce.

You may have seen the picture of a squirrel eating a bird. I have also seen a picture of a squirrel cannibalizing a baby squirrel.

All tree squirrels belong to the genus Sciurus, which comes from the Greek words "skia" (shadow) and "oura" (tail).

The American red squirrel is considered a tree squirrel and is now classified in genus Tamiasciurus.

Huh. Don't they interbreed with gray squirrels? That would indicate they should be in the same genus, right?

I see how it is. So only our cutest animal friends deserve special days? Don't the less photogenic but no less captivating-the platypuses, mandrills, hyenas and tapirs and so on-deserve a bit of the limelight as well?

Shocking faunal discrimination at work here.

Squirrels are disease carrying vermin, who's only goal in life is to burrow into your attic and breed. They really are rats with really poofy tails. Now owls, there's a majestic creature; and they eat squirrels.

Well, you can teach them to water-ski. Regular domestication can't be too much harder than that.

More frequent updates would be nice. I'm currently working on the 52 letter challenge. Missed one three weeks in, so I guess I need to finish reading the willpower series...
