It can't be where I work. No benefits, random hours, and the boss is a total dick.

/Self employed.

WRONG! The best company to work for in these United States is the United States Steel Corporation!

What say you, Pat Buchanan?

really?

Google gives researchers a place very much like a PhD Program without the BS requirements of core requirements and teaching assignments.

really?? didn't they fire the guy that came up with the concept of internet forums 20 years ago, cause he refused to work 10+ hour days or something like that a couple of years ago?

My favorite professor didn't get tenure because he didn't do enough research to please the board, despite being the best actual teacher in the department. He said, "screw you guys, I'll go work at Google" and so far he has really enjoyed it there. Hes not so happy about all the snow Seattle got this week though.

the fact that Deloitte is even represented in this list of 100 best employers means one of two things: either the list is invalid or working in the US can be worse han working seven days a week in an office where you have to book your own workspace every day.

Yeah, my co. not on the list. Surprise. No reason at all that a fortune 50 company should treat it's people well.

/No surprise really
//Probably a company rule against taking these surveys

My employer's main competitor is on the list, as they every single year. Meanwhile, the company I work for can't even get on the local list of best employers. A few years ago they tried to force everyone to fill out the survey, warning that failure to appear on the best employer list could result in massive layoffs. Still didn't make the list and I'm pretty sure the massive layoffs were already planned.

Hahaha...me too. Only I wouldn't change it for anything. Of course, my employees prefer that I remain in the office where I can talk on the phone, doodle on SolidWorks, hang out on Fark and in general stay off the shop floor. They crank out more widgets that way... ;^)

Unfortunately it also gives you the the same political bullshiat of a PhD program.

/hiring by committee doesn't work
//google's "perks" will start to go away in a few years - they've already started with the daycare program

Hey look at all these perks designed to wring as many hours out of your salaried ass by keeping you on campus. You may even do a 80 hour week without noticing.

2012-01-21 12:19:22 PM
"It's not about bringing these perks to work, and you work a 40-hour week" at Google, said Charlene Li, founder of Altimeter Group. "It's that you have all these perks that enable you to work much more than 40 hours a week."

And there it is. Bzzzzt, you fail.

/ YMMV

Google treats its employees that way because they are worth it. If you're a top notch statistician with excellent programming skills who is a team player, they will treat you well. If you're a self important asshole liberal arts major, not so much.

Today I learned that google doesn't hire designers or content producers.

Awesome. Had an employer like that once. It manifested in different ways, but same type of dumbasses. They're no longer in business, which makes me smile. Their director of operations applied where I work when they went under and they asked me if I knew her. I told them if they even let her in the building our stock would tank, and if they hired her we were done for. To all you jackass managers out there: you'll reap what you've sewn, biatches.

I work at a "Google-like" company.

The flex hours are great, as are the other perks.

Doesn't prevent your middle mgmt from being short-sighted and narrow-minded.

Thinking up out of the box ideas is one thing,
being able to accept a new idea and follow-thru with it, is another.

Just another Apple hater article, I see. I find it hard to believe that happy employees can make that craptacular android system.

2012-01-21 09:06:51 PM
The only reason they can afford to give these kind of perks is because their business pretty much prints money.

2012-01-22 10:27:13 AM
We're #56 on the list. It's a decent hospital, for sure, but it's not really any better or worse overall than any other I've worked for. We used to get fun perks 6+ years ago, but they've eroded year after year. Still damn good (though expensive) health insurance.
