Pretty much this.

Good ol' bureaucracy

Let the cop hate begin! Although this guy is a class act, I'm waiting for the inevitable deluge now from internet tough guys (who would be the first to call 911 if they were ever actually in real danger) sounding off on how much they hate cops because a cop once had the audacity to ticket them when they were going 25 mph over the speed limit.

Only greened because it uses those symbols that lurk beyond the keyboard. Oooooooh

No good deed goes unpunished.

He's a first-responder. I knew the motto "To Protect and Serve" didn't really mean shiat anymore, but damn. This guy did everything right and should be compensated should the need arise.

Bureaucracies aren't good or bad, they're just a tool. It's like bashing guns. The people running this are sociopaths with no sense of duty (or PR). Attack them.

The married, six-year veteran of the department said he's now waiting for a second notice to clarify that he'd be covered if he contracts any communicable diseases after being exposed to vomit during efforts to resuscitate the boy

Even FOX News is trolling now. Wanna bet the cop's in a union?

Marcus Aurelius: Wanna bet the cop's in a union?

TFA: a three-page response that also went to O'Brien, his police union and Chief William Gagliardi

This is a prime example of why we should bust up unions.

Hell yeah, no one else gets union benefits any more. Why should they? Maybe we should outlaw unions altogether.

That way we can all make $7.50 an hour on a 1099.

What a farking laugh. Guy does what he's trained to do. Not on the job, so the powers that be are now worried that he might claim some financial or disability issue in the future; therefore treat him like a douche before getting all the facts.
Now that he's been treated thus, why wouldn't he claim something? If they would have given him an "atttaboy" initially he wouldn't feel like he's being teated like a leech.

No wonder a lot of health care workers, emergency personel and others close their eyes when passing a car wreck or something similar. Good Samaritain law is no guarantee you won't get your ass handed to you.

/how do I know this?
//figure it out.

Problem these days is the union leadership will take bribes from management and make deals instead of fighting for the workers. In other words, politics as usual.

Geez...save the saving for the firefighters...the real heroes in civil service.

This is just sad.

And you guys wonder why cops are such assholes? When even your own city doesn't have your back, OF COURSE you're going to be mean and cranky. Do something mean: The public hates you. Do something nice: The department disowns you.

It's amazing we even have cops.

It seems to me this is the town's budgets decreasing were they need to cut corners.
still not just.

Hope none of them ever have a home invasion and need help while certain officers are ending their shift.

worry not. I'm sure they will be let go and their functions replaced by no-bid contracts to private security companies as soon as someone gets a kickback.

Won't be surprised if the second notice states that he is lucky they don't charge him with inappropriate contact with a minor. The community should back this guy and contact the mayor's office. Show him the same dedication to helping others.

Maybe we should just outlaw public sector emergency services. Make people pay for cops and firefighters on a per event basis. That would be all free markety.

To protect and serve.

Seems to me that administering CPR and/or First Aid fall under both of those.

2012-01-20 09:56:26 PM
Oh, and how much do you want to bet that if the officer had just stood by and watched the kid bleed/choke/die/whatever that there would have been a public outcry and he would have been punished for negligence?

2012-01-20 09:57:49 PM
Really? A cop's health benefits don't cover diseases they contract from doing CPR?

Um, shouldn't their health benefits cover any disease they contract that wasn't a pre-existing condition regardless of source? Even private health insurance generally does that.

Their health insurance might cover it but that may require co-pays and co-insurance payments. Whereas, something that is filed under work-comp would be paid by the city.

the thing about bureaucracies is that they have a continual need to prove that they are necessary. As such, they make simple things more and more complex to show how "useful" they're being.

Sad. Aren't cops presumed to be on duty even when "off the clock"?

How would this be even remotely considered not part of their duties?

Gonad the Ballbarian: Sad. Aren't cops presumed to be on duty even when "off the clock"?

He was on the clock. He was on-duty, and took the call from his dispatcher. That's not the issue here. The city's letter is saying that performing CPR isn't part of his job, he shouldn't have been doing it, and they're washing their hands of anything bad that happens to him because of it. My guess is they're more worried about a lawsuit from the dead boy's family than the possibility of him collecting worker's comp because of it.

I'm not a cop, just a county jail guard, but even I am trained as a medical first responder, and part of that training involves teaching me that I'll be in deep shiat if I DON'T try to same someone when I'm on duty. Every jurisdiction's different, but the road cops in my agency train right beside me and are told the same thing.

Actually sounds like a British story. Local council forbids fire department putting out fires from helping otherwise for liability reasons.

To Protect and Serve means the law...not the people.

Did this happen on off hours?

If a cop is allowed to carry 24/7 because they are never not a cop....then they should be compensated through benefits when they try to save a life cause they are never not a cop.

I remember the good old days back in NYC when cops and firefighters would beat the shiat out of eachother depending on who was responding first and whos job it was to save lives.....I think the city had to draw up rules for cops and firefighters after that....and EMS certified firefighters are the norm and not EMS cert'd cops.

off topic: I find trolls to be mostly amusing; whole new threads can develop as a result. Ignoring folks just makes things confusing so it's best to favorite and assign a color rather than block. I also don't have anybody favorited so the feel of each thread seems really organic to me.

topic back on.
