Good for Sum 41?

2012-01-20 05:06:44 PM
After I read this headline someone in the office went "GAAAA" and for a second I thought it was related... so yeah.

2012-01-20 05:13:12 PM
Remembering their crappy music makes me feel old

2012-01-20 05:43:10 PM
1997? They were at the height of their popularity in the early part of the 21st century.

jaylectricity: the height of their popularity

Please tell me you at least giggled, tittered, snickered, or let out a little "tee-hee" when you typed that.

Well...for New Found Glory, anyway. Hee hee.

I guess subby took a time machine to 2001, picked up Sum 41's first album, then went back to 1997 to make this stupid headline accurate.

Storming through this thread like my name was El Niño.

Did he warn them about 9/11?

And nothing of value was lost.

Good for all of us.

Man, I know it's not the best music or anything like that, but "All Killer No Filler" was a damn solid summer-after-high-school album.

2012-01-20 08:10:05 PM
I remember when "fat lip" came out. When i was stuck in a calgary hotel during a band trip,
Much Music played it alot. that and "we are all made of stars" by Moby.

then they did a video that parodied "last nite" by the Strokes, then I never heard anything else by them.....

2012-01-20 08:10:54 PM
Fat Lip is fun to jam to when you are driving. And I always thought the blonde chick with the blue baseball cap in the video was cute!

And NFG's big 2 albums didn't come out until 200 (self-titled) and 2002 (Sticks and Stones).

So for either band, it's barely 10 years after they first hit it big.

2012-01-20 08:15:31 PM
Goddammit! My year is absolutely ruined now.

Who do they think they are, the Rolling Stones?

That's what I thought. I started college in 97, and the top-sellers then were Marilyn Manson, Korn, Notorious BIG, etc. Sum 41 and New Found Glory were around 2003-2005.

Subby is either 15 or 50..

Are you sure you don't mean Blink 182?

fusillade762: Are you sure you don't mean Blink 182?

Can you tell the difference? Musically I mean, since one lead singer banged Avril Lavigne and Paris Hilton while the other did not.

Yeah, I thought Sum 41 hit it in 2001 but I didn't want to sound like I knew that.

You guys are crazy, clearly its Green day.

2012-01-20 09:00:30 PM
I love New Found Glory. They're still considered one of the biggest bands around, just in their genre. I saw Sum 41 play a couple of years ago, and it really took me back to when I was younger. Haven't been to fond of their recent stuff, though.

2012-01-20 09:00:56 PM
The tour still has Man Overboard so it's going to be great.
That band seriously rocks.

2012-01-20 09:07:53 PM
In a statement, Whibley says, "I feel really terrible about letting down the fans..."

"Fans." Plural. Deryck, you should go into stand-up comedy.

Their good guitarist (the indian looking guy) left and anything released since then has sucked (or sucked even more depending on your pov).

At the bottom of the article, the first link underneath the heading that says "more New Found Glory headlines" was a link to Hayley Williams being sick of pregnancy rumors. I clicked to open a story from 2009. I had to go back to make sure this wasn't actually an article from 1997.

Sum 41 just put out an album that my girlfriend bought. I was listening to it as background noise one day and like a fungus, it kind of grew on me. Nothing I'd buy or go see live, but whatevs!

2012-01-20 09:30:30 PM
CSB...

I hooked up with the lead singer of NFG's girlfriend in a hot tub in Marina Del Rey back in '01.

I know. Not a fark was given that day or any other...

2012-01-20 10:00:26 PM
Two bands I wasn't even aware still existed....

2012-01-20 10:26:47 PM
Sum 41 still exists?

2012-01-20 10:32:41 PM
Having RTFA, for some stupid reason, it claims they had to cancel 'cause the singer has a bad back. Dude doesn't even have to support the weight of an instrument. So, the doctors said something, something, wheelchair. So what? If Stiv Bator could play shows in a wheelchair, so can you, shiathead. Oh, well, not like it was anything I would have wanted to see, anyway.

Just to feel older than you

//I probably know one of their songs, just don't know the bands names, fairly bad with that

Sum 41 didn't release their first album until 2001. "Pieces" is also a great farking song.

Oh, Blink 182 kicks farking ass.

So does AVA.

You should stay away from the music at every party everywhere.

I bet I've never even heard of your favorite band.

"New Found Glory" has annoyed me ever since I heard their name. "Newfound" is one word, damn it.

Those mallpunk bands were pretty good, for the niche they filled. A lot of suburban white kids will go through a phase where a nice dose of pseudo-punk and faux-counterculture aggression delivered through angst-y lyrics and bathroom humor that even in the most conservative of households won't go past a PG-13 rating in the eyes of Mom & Dad fills a void. You might get your ass grounded if you crank up the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" or something by N.W.A in Mom's station wagon on the way to Hot Topic, but to her "Fat Lip" for instance is merely a playful homage youthful indiscretion that at no point would she take seriously.

/fully admits to playing Blink 182's Dude Ranch ad nauseam for a whole summer during middle school.
//grew out of it.

1997 was the year of Third Eye Blind's self titled debut album and Radiohead's Ok Computer. How dare you sully the name of 97 with your musical anachronisms subby!

ok, this time frame is right up my musical alley (graduated HS in 98), so I'm glad to come in and see everyone berating Subby for being 4 years off with his reference.
Third Eye Blind didn't want any of this headline, subs? How bout Marcy Playground? or Eve6? Jeez i can rattle these '97 bands off like nothing. Semisonic? I mean, come on.

2012-01-21 01:26:02 AM
New Found Glory's singer has one the most annoying voices ever.

/liked Shai Hulud though

sticking up for LOUD MOUTH, Blink 182 fans come in many categories. There are
1. People who dont like regular radio music, just the hardcore/punky stuff cuz it scares mom and dad. (But they don't realize... that by being on regular radio, it automatically takes them out of the hardcore/punky category)
2.People who believe the main face of the band is actually a good drummer. Tattoos and image does not equal skillz.

Those are the many categories for anyone to possibly like this band. Next time, you should not be so obtuse.

Every year produces the best and worst music ever. It's uncanny...mostly because we have better audio equipment that doesn't sound like a tin can.

sum 41's lead singer is also a guitarist in the band, so yes he does carry an instrument. and even if he didn't, rock music and even pop music is supposed to be upbeat and energetic. band members (at least at the shows i go to) are usually running around the stage and bouncing around to get the crowd interested and keep the energy going. that doesn't really work if the lead singer is in a wheelchair. it would just be depressing.

Oh "Sum of these guys, sum of those guys"....

that put together poseur band Greg "is that coke?" Nori from the Canukistan bland "Terrible Charger" threw up one day after a binge...
