It's a shiatload cheaper than a bunch of unplanned/unwanted babies.

ecmoRandomNumbers: It's a shiatload cheaper than a bunch of unplanned/unwanted babies.

But unplanned and unwanted babies mostly plague the poor, or make you poor, creating a larger underclass for a slave labor pool. They're also far more likely to be under- or uneducated, a prime Republican voting demographic. Add to that higher incidence of criminality to provide fuel for the private prison machine, and the ease with which the rich sidestep this whole morass, and it's no wonder the righties decry readily available birth control.

Why are women contraceptives so expensive? Didn't most of the R&D for that get done in the 50s (and they saved $$$ on it by testing it on human subjects in Puerto Rico w/o following more expensive ethical protocols).

I always figured that by adding it to insurance the companies charge whatever they want and women just keep getting the stuff w/o questioning the price because insurance pays for it. This of course makes the contraceptives less accessible to women w/o insurance who probably have more need for effective contraception than their insured counterparts.

Maybe instead of adding it to health plans the government should had regulated the price down to a few cents a pill.

(But then again my premise may be wrong and there may be other unintended consequences to having cheap available oral contraceptives in this manner instead of through health plans)

IDK. Maybe a public health mayor out there understands this better.

Getting laws requiring you to pay them. Check
Getting the Govt to force them to add something that will lower thier cost. Check
Raising premiums when both cost and liability go down.... Double Check

Darth_Lukecash: How is giving birth related to crime?

Lack of access to contraception/abortion tends to lead to more children than parents can afford to raise, increasing poverty rates; higher poverty tends to yield higher crime rates.

How is giving birth related to crime?

It's a reference to Freakanomics. Crime rates began to fall across the board starting in 1994, and violent crime began to fall as early as 1991, which was the highest rates ever recorded in the US. They bottomed out in 2004, but have slightly risen since then. Violent crime rates are approximately half today what they were in 1991. This has been attributed to a very large number of things over time including gun laws, better policing and more jails, without any conclusive evidence. Levitt and Dubner postulated that the likely cause was actually Roe v. Wade. Unwanted children, carried to term because an abortion was not possible, are far more likely to be come criminals. Because of the legalization of abortion and the increase in contraceptives since then, there are less unwanted children who might become criminals.

1991 was 18 years after Roe v. Wade.

Well, if we go with the traditional version of "slut" which is a woman who engages in pre-marital sex, then yes. They refuse to sleep with me. Because I am not a lesbian.

If we go with the new version of "slut" which is a woman who says "fark you, I do what I want", than yes. Because I am not a lesbian.

Are you saying Canadian women are smarter than their US counterparts? Because up here, the pill costs around 1/3 to 1/2 of what you Yanks pay for it.

Yeah, I know. It is an interesting conclusion, especially since the other theories put forward can be disproved.

Crime rates have absolutely plummeted in the last twenty years, no matter what the media tells you.

In 1991, the violent crime rate was 844.2 - out of 100,000 people, in a given year 844.2 of them were a victim of violent crime. That includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. In 2004, that number was 427. As of the most recent statistics from the FBI, the UCR is only updated through 2009, that number was 449.8

That's an astonishing drop.

Leaded gasoline is interesting, but it should have been noticeable almost immediately. Lead falls out of the atmosphere in just a year or two. A quick look at Wiki says we stopped using it after crime rates began to fall. That's a no-go to me.

Leaded gas as a cause for Alzheimer's is pretty likely though.

Yeah, I'm not sure about why either. What you say seems to make sense, but in Turkey we also have a private health insurance system and a public one (you can choose which you want), and birth control pills are still incredibly cheap, like a couple of bucks for a month's worth out of pocket. That's how it should cost for everyone, but I'm a crazy social democrat so what do I know?
