"We agree, everyone should use common sense - which is what prosecutors in New York do," Bloomberg spokesman Marc LaVorgna told the News. "Common sense also includes checking gun laws before traveling - something even the NRA tells people to do."

Yeah, but if she used common sense she couldn't hold herself up as some kind of 2nd Amendment martyr, so you can understand the pickle she was in.

She's a dumbass for bringing her gun with her without checking the laws in the state she was traveling to. End of story.

I'm not saying gun owners lack common sense, but....

Yet Republicans want to give states more power over citizens rights so stuff like this would become more common.

Isn't just being a New Yorker in Tennessee punishment enough?

2012-01-20 02:25:27 PM
I gotta say, the cops were kind of pricks. They could have given them a warning, especially if they were from out of state.

Gun owners should realize the laws before they travel. Not only that, but a true gun owner knows about New Yorks Draconian Hand Gun Laws..

This. Though it must be admitted that a smarter, better man than Bloomberg wouldn't dignify what the guy from Tennessee said with a comment.

This is a stupid showboat response from this guy and doesn't help with the plea negotiations that are currently taking place.

This. How stupid do you have to be to assume that just because you have a license to carry in one state, it's transferable to all states? The last time I visited my family in FL, my mother gave me my father's .357. Before I left, I checked the laws in every state along the I-95 corridor to make sure I would be in compliance w/the strictest.

Even as a 2nd amendment martyr, she's doing a lousy job. You have a moral obligation to disobey unjust laws, but you do so from a position of willfulness, not ignorance. "Oopsie, I didn't know," is not a defense. "Your law is unjust and shouldn't withstand challenge," is.

Yeah, he shouldn't have acknowledged this hillbilly's little temper tantrum... A short "Duly Noted" would have sufficed.

Exactly. It's entirely the owners' responsibility to know and be in compliance with the applicable laws in each state they're traveling in.

I guarantee this woman's handgun is used more as a fashion accessory than for any kind of "self-defense".

GAT_00: To be fair, we've got enough terrible drivers without New Yorkers driving here too.

I've driven in a lot of states and can tell you that overall, New Yorkers are pretty much mid-pack when it comes to bad driving.

If you really want to see world-class bad drivers, you need to go to MA or AZ.

Also, as far as I've seen, New Yorkers are the only drivers in the country who know how to properly merge. If you take a Los Angeles freeway and find a spot where it goes from 6 lanes into 5, there's a 3 mile backup. Now go to the Lincoln Tunnel and watch New Yorkers merge from 9 lanes into 1... it's like a farking ballet.

Though a few years ago the rest of Quebec got permission, you still cannot turn right on a red in the city of Montreal. It would kill too many people, as they. just. cannot. drive.

Ok, does TN have the same CCL have the same CCL laws as other states? (That is, you have to go through classes and all that first.) If so, don't they cover basic shiat like "DIFFERENT STATES HAVE DIFFERENT LAWS. CHECK THEM BEFORE BRINGING YOUR GUN ACROSS STATE LINES"? If not, it's a failing of the state. If so, then she's a dumbshiat that deserves whatever they charge her with.

It's not really an option for them. They couldn't let her keep the gun on her, and they sure as hell weren't going to hold it for her.

I'm not conspiracy minded, but this shiat happened 3 times in the course of a week. I was wondering if someone is coordinating to push an issue.

It breaks down, since I'm pretty sure anyone with a driver's license knows to follow the speed limit.

Also, whatever happened to "ignorance of the law is no excuse"?

It would have been lovely if NY had responded with a statement thanking TN for the advice and agreeing that citizens should always follow the law when they visit new places.

I don't think it does break down, since anyone with a concealed carry permit knows that laws change from state to state.

Individuals who own and who normally carry firearms who wish to travel to New York bear a responsibility to understand that the city of New York does neither honors nor respects the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and that the city imposes unreasonable and entirely unjustified restrictions upon civilian firearm possession.

2012-01-20 04:15:18 PM
You would think that they would go pretty easy on her if she was attempting to come into compliance. It sounds like she went to the police to resolve the issue, it isn't like they just caught her packing heat. They may have still had to arrest her, but there is likely some room for discretion.

Worst drivers are in Alabama. Not only is it common practice for people to drive in the left lane, but they do so at the speed limit -- when I lived down there not a day went by when I didn't pass in the right lane. I used to drive from Atlanta to Central Alabama all the time, and it was remarkable how the quality in driving deteriorated the closer you got to Alabama.

Agreed - however i'd quantify it by saying that New York City residents are generally very good drivers, at least those whom choose to drive. Upstate drivers are much less patient and less good - closer to Mass. But still better.

LAst week we took my father's truck to a dealer in Queens, and my mother (we followed behind to take him home) had never driven in NYC traffic. She had at least two break downs. Not her car - her. She couldn't handle it.

You know who suck at driving? Westchester people. Holy moley, are they just plain awful drivers. Not that their roads help any, either.

Yes, because punishing New Yorkers WITH CARS will get people from New York City....where most people don't own cars.

When he says 'better watch your speed' does he mean they better go the speed limit or that if they don't have videographic proof they will get 'speeding tickets' based on what the cops claim they were doing?

/Moral: Don't go to Tennessee, it's a drive around state, anyways.

I kind of feel for her. Yeah, yeah, liberal with sympathy, but as a relatively new resident of NYC I checked state laws about length of pocket knives and felt comfortable carrying the one I always carried in Chicago. Turns out there's a NYC administrative code that has nothing to do with the length of the knife, just that one cannot be showing on a person. If it was concealed? No biggie unless they had a reason to search me.. but because the officers could see the clip in my pocket, they confiscated it and gave me a court date.

So.. it wasn't concealed, which was an offense. Ooookay!

/csb
//court date assigned was for a sunday, so they told me it was thrown out
///wouldn't return the knife. :/
////would cost more to fight that than just get a new one

thornhill: Worst drivers are in Alabama

Nonsense. Alabama drivers aren't that bad at all. Maryland drivers swerve in and out of wherever the hell they feel like without signals and drive either 15 under or 30 over.
