I know you're being sarcastic and mocking the people who would use an argument like that in all seriousness, but every time I hear it even in jest it makes me cringe. Because there really are people out there who haven't yet figured out that weather in one pocket of one piece of the world is different than global climate and that a warmer planet overall will in fact mean things like more productive storms.

Poe's law, I guess. :-/

The big one - that anything that happened is purely due to cyclical weather patterns and not as the result of any anthropogenic causes.

2012-01-20 01:50:30 PM
Since long-term climate patterns tend to be clumped into groupings, this isn't all that significant. We are definitely in a warming pattern, the question is whether or not it is anthropogenic or natural..

What it all boils down is: Al Gore is fat, therefore anthropogenic climate change is a hoax perpetrated by a conspiracy of tens of thousands of climate scientists.

Real climate change deniers say the data sucks, is manipulated, is omitted and the research is funded by a liberal conspiracy. They don't even question the science, they question the data and the people funding the science.

Flab: Solyndra?

One of the resident climate deniers recently went on a rant about how when Jesus died, his body decomposed instantly, sending radiation outwards that was absorbed by the Shroud of Turin, and still detectable by certain instruments. And then it got weird.

But yeah, we're supposed to believe they're honest "skeptics" who haven't seen quite enough scientific evidence to persuade them yet.

An insult (worse than hillbilly) given to residents of West Virginia. According to history, the city of East Liverpool OH, across the river from WV, was an important maker of pottery. West Virginia residents looking for work in the area were only skilled enough to bang together the metal strips that would make the hoops needed for barrel construction.

You may wish to begin with this reprint of Rosenzweig, et al. It's a reasonably accessible primary research article from Nature demonstrating why the recently observed climate change has diverse signals that fall outside the range of natural variability. Less accessible but certainly relevant is Swanson, et al.. The abstract from it:

"Global mean temperature at the Earth's surface responds both to externally imposed forcings, such as those arising from anthropogenic greenhouse gases, as well as to natural modes of variability internal to the climate system. Variability associated with these latter processes, generally referred to as natural long-term climate variability, arises primarily from changes in oceanic circulation. Here we present a technique that objectively identifies the component of inter-decadal global mean surface temperature attributable to natural long-term climate variability. Removal of that hidden variability from the actual observed global mean surface temperature record delineates the externally forced climate signal, which is monotonic, accelerating warming during the 20th century."

(Cue the "That's RASST" kid.)

I am not well versed enough in climate science to be able to discern whether or not it's man-made, I was mainly commenting on the "9 out of ten years" comment.

Weeeeeeeeeelllll.... the problem with that headline there is that meteorological records have really only been kept for about 150 years & the first 50 years were probably pretty suspect as far as accuracy goes. I don't mean to say that that makes these statistics IRRELEVANT, it just kind of puts them into perspective.

Also, I think El Nino & La Nina (which we are in the middle of now, which basically makes the weather backwards and upside down) play a big part in wreaking havoc with our perceptions of the climate. "OMG it's 75 degrees in Dallas today!" "It's snowing in Seattle!" "Tornadoes in Missouri!" I think a lot of people forget about them until we're so far into it that it turns out we've been dealing with it for months. Last year was an El Nino year. We're currently dealing with a fairly strong La Nina. However, as pointed out by the esteemed Pocket Ninja, current weather patterns don't mean shiat, at least not on their own. Dust in the wind, sands through the hourglass, drop in the ocean, etc.

So.... I think as far as anthropogenic global warming goes, we should consider all view points. Even the dumb ones. It helps us consider more carefully our facts & opinions. However. IMNHO this is really the only argument you need:

And the answer is, "It's most likely anthropogenic, as that's the direction the vast majority of the evidence points."

You are asking people who rely on two invisible hands (The almighty and Free Market) over a wacky thing like "science" and "evidence".

Now if you found a piece of toast with Jesus saying that the earth is warming, you might have a chance.

2012-01-20 03:26:42 PM
The current warming began in 1750.... the previous warming ended in 1450. The height of the roman empire was exceptionally warm. But these are just micro climate variations. hell we're still in an ice age, just between glacial periods. It'll be very interesting to see what coming out of that longer will look like, or IS looking like.
