I spent two days in the Tampa-St Pete area a few weeks ago. I thought it was actually rather pleasant.

Then I got to the third day.

Tampa, like Miami and Orlando are nice places to visit...however, actually living there is a different story. I'm surprised they don't have more suicides.

Tampa is like Disney World for crazy people. It's warm, the cost of living is cheap, and it's large enough and weird enough that no one looks at you twice for being a little off.

hmm the wife is wanting to move to Florida for health reasons within two to three years. Her grandmother lives in Port Orange. Having lived in Oklahoma City (which really would not be considered a big city at all) my assumption on any of the big cities in Florida was that the bigger they are (Miami, Orlando, Tampa/St. Pete) the more crazy it is. Correct me if I am wrong, but I suggested to her if she really wanted to move there then how about living either in the middle of the state (not Orlando) so you have access to either the Atlantic or Gulf coasts when you want the beach or live on the Gulf side away from the Metropolitan areas and then when she wanted to visit her grandma, it would only be what 3-4 hours across the state.

I really liked it in my admittedly short time visiting there. It has my #1 desire in a place to live (beaches), my #1 fiscal desire (low rent), there's a casino...I would definitely move there from Atlanta if given a chance. The only other place I've really lived is Denver...that place sucked. Cold, no beaches, guys seemingly outnumber girls 10-1. Nice place to live if you're married though, since fun is out of the question.

Not really surprised at Vegas either. I've been here 9 years, and have managed to avoid committing suicide yet though!

Unfortunately, places in the middle of the state like Lakeland seem to distill the crazy into a fine liquor that is difficult to remove the stench of.

The middle of the state is pretty empty. Lots of farms and cow pastures...To be honest, I'd recommend either the northern east coast (north of Ft. West Palm to Jacksonville), or the southern west coast (south of Tampa to Naples.)

When they both came into existence they played at the Thunder Dome , which is now Tropicana field and houses the Rays.

Tampa the 36est. So it is hard to blame them for feeling the stress of the fellow human who is looking at them thinking WOW YOU MUST LOSE THE WEIGHT.

What does give me much surprise is that Jacksonville does not have the higher suicide rate than does the city which is Tampa because would not the fatter people wish for more of the self killing? As someone who used this reasoning six years ago and moved to Gainesville I can only suggest the you move to one coast or the other. You go to the beach a lot more if you live near it.

I like Tampa/St. Pete. But then again I am a little strange. They have some good museums, decent universities, nice beaches, fishing, spring training, low cost of living. It's like anywhere else if you move into a crappy neighborhood and have a crappy attitude you will have a crappy experience.

I've spent the last year in Tampa and really like it.

That said, I moved from Baltimore so my standards were incredibly low.
