Yeah, I'm thinking the spokesperson who published that foolish "it's all the fault of the passengers, the crew put out a great team effort" letter is probably going to be spending the next few years looking for work.
There's nothing like evidence to destroy even the ballsiest PR effort.

I assume this crewmember was not fully informed either, and was told to have passengers return to their cabins. I would be amazed if random crew members were deciding on their own what announcements to make, and to whom and when to make them. If the captain and officers weren't being honest with the rest of the crew, then there's not much they can do.
In this case, I'm alright with the "I was just following orders" defense.

On fark here just the other day everyone was orchestrating the message to blame it all on the poor old captain. Apparently farkers are idiots and a few days late at that. It was obvious from the beginning..
Anyone with half a brain know this is a failure on multiple levels with Carnival being the biggest one to blame.

Yeah, I don't blame this crew member. Her talk of the electrical failure is probably what she was told. And she was probably told that she should calm people down and avoid panic, since panic is well-known to be a problem in any crowded situation. I doubt she had any indication from the bridge that they were in danger of sinking.
Maybe I'm missing it, but I'm surprised that there are not more amateur videos posted of the whole event. Wouldn't pretty much thousands of people have been recording it on their phones and cameras?

How many people ended up in the water having to swim? I'm guessing iPhones/Androids don't function very well once they get a nice dunk in sea water.

I'm also wondering how the passengers died. I bet a lot drowned, due to inability to swim, undertow, or medical conditions in the water. I'm betting that those who died on ship died of medical conditions, or maybe trampling. I bet few were trapped in their rooms, but I'm not sure. I know they have found 11 bodies - any word on what those bodies died from? Other than Carnival and Captain stupidity?

List of Dead:
Tomas Alberto Costilla Mendoza - 49 from Peru, was a crew member aboard the Costa Concordia when she sank off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012.

I guess some were getting trapped in their cabins. :(
A Korean couple on their honeymoon were both found alive in their cabin after being trapped for more than 24 hours.
Multiple staff members:
There are still at least 17 passengers/workers that are still unaccounted for. 6 were thought to be part of the ship's staff and 11 passengers.

None of the navigational officers died. Nearly all of them left the ship with the captain on his launch (not a lifeboat). They were nearly the first people off the ship and then watched it sink from the shore for over an hour before the Italian coast guard contacted him. Read the court transcripts linked in the thread from the earlier article today.

I have a GPS accurate to 6 feet which cost me $89.00. Someone like to explain how a ship worth nearly $1 billion doesn't have better navigation equipment?

I don't know.. if my boat hit a rock and began to list, the last thing on my mind would be to whip out the cameraphone and start recording. In fact, if I may be all ITG here for a moment, if in the course of evacuation I had to make a choice between trampling Hitler or some arsehole filming the chaos with an iPad, well, we'd all probably be singing 'Deutschland Uber Alles' in the lifeboat.

What you say is very reasonable and I probably wouldn't be thinking about recording the event either. But if youtube vids have proven nothing else, it's that many people are happy to have a go at recording something even if they are in immediate danger. I'm kinda surprised there aren't more vids either.
Also, whats the possiblity that the captain is a psycho and when presented with the opportunity, decided that he might as well take advantage of the situation. Maybe he just figured 'when else will I get the chance to possibly kill dozens of people and make it look like an accident'.
/Not serious about that last part

I hope every understands that the captain doesn't actually pilot the ship. Hell, the captain may not have even been on the bridge at the time. But that doesn't relieve him of responsibility for his ship and crew.
I don't know about Italy, but here in the US, most non-naval vessels are piloted into port by harbor pilots, who board the vessel as it is about to enter the harbor channel. It's really cool to watch these guys board the ship. It's actually rather dangerous and not for the timid.

This one will be very interesting. Some of the statements put out by the company are questionable.
These ships are tracked 24/7 by AIS and there are satellite communications. There is evidence that these sort of "sail-by" course changes have been done in the past, so at minimum the company knew that it was a common practice. Also, there would have been communication between the ship and the company during the accident. It will be interesting to see what comes of that.

An Italian television station made public Thursday new amateur video showing a staffer of the cruise ship that last week ran aground off Tuscany urging a hallway full of passengers in life jackets to return to their rooms.
Made my head hurt.
