Because there's totally NOT dozens of other sites that are exactly the same.

2012-01-20 11:29:44 AM
Daclips.com dropped off of all the P2P servers on SOPA-PIPA day... they always streamed through without buffering issues.

You'll be missed.

2012-01-20 11:29:57 AM
i guess there's no other way to share files.

No, it will always be there.

Refuse to vote in the two party system.

When they came for MegaUplaod, I didn't say anything. Hey, I don't USE MegaUpload!

/SARC or something.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Nooooooooooooo

MegaUpload wasn't taken down JUST for piracy, though that's what a lot of the tech sites focused on.

According to the indictment, there was a lot of shady shiat going on, including money laundering and the such.

Unless people think it's normal for owners of file sharing sites to own millions of dollars worth of cars and large houses.

MegaUpload was a 'mega conspiracy,' Justice Department alleges

The Justice Department is a 'mega conspiracy' I allege.

How's that "fast and furious" thing working out for you? Still lying to Congress and stonewalling?

2012-01-20 11:31:01 AM
Eh, I give it a week or two until they move the servers to another country, or another service takes over for them.

In the meantime though, IceFilms.com is going to be rather light on TV/movies to watch.

If anyone sees shutting down MegaUpload as anything other than Obama saying "I have your back" to the MPAA please report back to reality ASAP.

Wasn't megaupload the 14th most popular site on the internet? What sort of revenue does that kind of traffic bring in?

/really curious if anyone knows

2012-01-20 11:34:23 AM
I'm still trying to figure out how they made that much money.

People PAY for file sharing sites?
People PAY for porn?
People PAY for Fark?

2012-01-20 11:34:28 AM
wtf is megaupload? How is it different from, say, Isohunt?

2012-01-20 11:34:55 AM
Oh, it may not bode well for openly public file sharing websites, but if anything this will in the end only serve to speed the progress and evolution of free file sharing. Mark my words, this will eventually be seen as a huge gaffe by the DoJ.

2012-01-20 11:35:33 AM
But how do I now share my video that I own copyright on?

really, I make my own films and need to share huge files over the net.

No, really.

Obamabots will never acknowledge that the president who was against NDAA before he signed it might actually support SOPA and PIPA.

My biggest concern (speaking of premium subscribers) is whether or not they're going to go after those who paid for the premium service, but didn't view copyrighted content. Believe it or not there were plenty of cat videos and the like on the MegaVideo service. I have a feeling there's going to be a great many people caught in the crossfire of this.

I've used up my 72 minutes of caring today. I just reset my attitude, but I think I can just get by using another site. And another after that. And after that, etc.

Wasn't this the exact sort of site that SOPA was targeting? So, they can take down the site with out the new law? Imagine that!

Megaupload had over 1 billion users and 50 million unique users a day. I'd be surprised if they go after everyone with a premium account and not just those who made money via the rewards program with copywritten content.

Fair enough, my last film had 9 old guys and a bunch of kids with learning disabilities. Not your bag I take it?

I sort of understand this. When you say SOPA is unnecessary, you have to demonstrate that this is so. Probably by shutting somebody down using existing laws. Yes it sucks, but others will pop up to do what they do (or they'll beat the rap and go back to operating). It'll be alright, ultimately.

To be fair, the CEO is also a rapper and producer, so yeah, it's actually perfectly normal.

Maybe now we can convince people to start using SFTP and private, password protected websites to transfer information around rather than ad-riddled security risks.

fireclown: wtf is megaupload? How is it different from, say, Isohunt?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Isohunt and other torrent sites don't actually host the file. The file is hosted among all the users who have the associated tracker and are sharing the file.

MegaUpload actually hosts all the files themselves on their servers.

If you shut down Isohunt, everyone will still be able to shar the file, they'll just have to find another tracker.

If you shut down MegaUpload, the files are on their servers and essentially lost (which sucks for anyone that used them for legitimate/business purposes).

It's a file storage site. You download files directly off Megaupload's servers, rather than through a p2p network.

This case wasn't about file sharing. It was about a bunch of guys transferring huge sums of money to shell corporations in various locations around the world, and actively plotting through emails to figure out how to get as much copyrighted material onto their site as possible and profit off of it.

If you support torrenting and file sharing, you should be happy this happened. These dicks were ruining it for everyone else.

In Silicon Valley the estimate for an average ad supported company is about $5Million in revenue. You kinda hit a wall after that because attaining the level of popularity needed to get past that is difficult.

Megaupload had both ad support and a subscription model, which drastically improves your revenue. Being in the top 20 websites in the world would confer much larger advertising revenue, maybe $20 Million + per year? With the subscription model, the sky is the limit, so I'd estimate that Megaupload was probably pulling down at a minimum of $50 million, but more likely in the $200-$250M range. These are conservative estimates, I'm not sure how big their subscription base was/is, but they have a worldwide presence. Estimate a gross margin of about 75%-80% (fairly standard for web companies) and you get a nice and tidy sum for the founders of the company to drown themselves in houses, cars, hookers, and blow.

Since we're on this stupid farking topic - is there a legal way for me to buy Sherlock other than buying the Region 2 DVDs from England? I don't mind doing that actually, but I want to be sure I can play them with VLC without changing the region on my laptop because I can only do it four times. I know I can probably buy them and then rip them but I've never done that with region 2 DVDs before.

Anyone have advice for me?

Endorsements is one thing. Donations is another, and as far as I'm aware Swizz Beatz isn't mentioned at all in the indictment. This is about the actual foreign owners and controllers of Megaupload.

Seriously.

Justice department significantly overstaffed and overpaid (not to mention their benefits and retirement packages) since 9/11. There's still a valid core of their work, but there are also legions of ppl with nothing to do but grow their departments and mission creep; closing old cold cases and interfering. Contributes nothing to getting our economy or our nation's health.
