If you insist.

If you had to deal with Ohio, you'd want to be a lot more than 5.4% more drunk than normal.

2012-01-20 12:08:32 PM
This seems low. Browns fans must be slacking off.

2012-01-20 12:09:11 PM
Subby, it may mean they are buying more of the good stuff.

or not.

or perhaps we stay drunk to forget we're in ohio

Guess in the end OU didn't stop partying without me. Hrm.

For this is old Ohiiiooo's daaaay

I guess I need to start hanging out with Ohio.

The one thing that was not taken into account for this study was that I moved here. *hiccup*

Nah, we stay drunk to deal with idiots traveling through the state/vacationing...

At least, that is what I do.

2012-01-20 12:19:28 PM
Born and raised in Ohio, that's pretty much the only thing to do there, and you have to be drunk to enjoy or even deal with being in Ohio.

2012-01-20 12:19:54 PM
Hrm, that Fox News doc said Americans are drinking because of muslim terrorism, gay marriage, and illegal immigration. Must be a lot of that in Ohio then.

2012-01-20 12:21:46 PM
Having spent 8 years living in the general vicinity of Ohio State, I can't say I'd even notice a 5% difference.

Ohio: "Birthplace Of Aviation"

Ohio: "The Heart Of It All"

Ohio: "We're Not Wisconsin. Yet."

No, they built up a tolerance.

Well, in Cleveland, the main point of pride is "Hey, we're not Detroit."

2012-01-20 12:25:42 PM
Isn't that actually a bad sign? People tend to drink more when they have no prospects.

2012-01-20 12:29:07 PM
Uh, that was my fault. I won't say why, but PA's liquor sales dropped last year.

/This may or may not be true.

2012-01-20 12:38:44 PM
Hey they took my plan of drinking through bad times. Wake up sober when its better.

IrateShadow: Isn't that actually a bad sign?

This. Not that I've ever verified it with data, but CW is that vice sectors improve during bad times.

We drink most of the time, but always when it rains. We got 15" above the yearly record rainfall in 2011. Cheers!

2012-01-20 12:45:10 PM
Last trip I made to Cleveland this is all I saw.

Churches
Liquor stores
Payday loan stores

That place is dismal to say the least.

2012-01-20 12:46:13 PM
Doing my part.

2012-01-20 12:46:37 PM
Since they only have state owned liquor stores - how's this good news?

That's not true. My cousin and aunt live in Ohio and they both smoke a LOT of weed.

Yeah... that's what he tries to say in TFA:

"State Commerce Director David Goodman says the difference means people are buying pricier, premium products as tastes become more sophisticated."

which is all well and good, until you get to the next line:

"The top brand of liquor sold in the state last year was Kamchatka vodka"

Not exactly Belvedere now, is it?

//kraut balls... you can't explain that

weren't there unusual tornadoes this year?
Doesn't that mean more drinking?

tetsoushima: I guess I need to start hanging out with Ohio.

Don't. We're not fun drunks. We're horribly depressed. It comes from the daily realization of the fact that we live in Ohio.

It can't possibly be that low, that's only $70 per capita or a couple decent bottles. I find it hard to believe that the average couple only goes through four bottles of booze in a year. There are either more teatotalers in the southern part of the state than I suspected or that's the tax revenue and not the retail sales.

2012-01-20 01:08:45 PM
Officials note in a news release that there was a smaller, 3.9 percent increase in the number of gallons of spirits sold

There we go. I think the spread really points to inflation, not an improving economy.

2012-01-20 01:09:35 PM
Unemployment rates went from 6% to 10% in three years... what else are people supposed to do when they're not going to work?

2012-01-20 01:13:23 PM
I know I've done my part because there's still some left over there that I haven't drunk yet.

Been in this state 36 years. More alcohol sales does not mean our economy is improving. It means people are so damned depresed that they're buying more liquor to drown out the fact that they live in this state.

I live in Springfield, the proclaimed most depressed city in America, and it's about the truth. We have four types of jobs in this town. Hospital/doctor's offices, restaurants, retail/grocery, and a handful of family owned manufacturing jobs that depend on the good ol' boy network to fill positions.

CSB: My dad has been a machinist all his life. He finally got a temp job at a manufacturing company and he had to temp for almost 2 years before thy hired him full time and after a year of that, he was laid off. And that's pretty much the way it goes with most of Springfield's manufacturing jobs. Unless you're someone's brother, you're laid off for years at a time. Most of these places employee less workers than a McDonalds, to boot.

I live in Ohio.
I don't drink.
I often want to.

I used to think the rest of the country was less racist than here, but after reading FARK, I know that's not true.

/just may go for a drink after work

I would put my money on anything north of Columbus! Living in North East Ohio (Cleveland), I see quite a bit of consumption.
Note what the top seller is!

It's pretty safe to assume that exactly the opposite is true, considering the economy.

The argument can easily be made that "the South" begins in Grove City.

Pretty much this. Columbus, OH is one of the drunkest places I've ever been. Dayton is one of the most crack-smokingest places I've ever been.

Also what of the record sales of bath salts? Does that mean the economy is better?

As someone who is currently sitting in Columbus and planning on going to a bar this evening in about 3.5 hours, I am getting a kick out of this.

WorldKnowledge: Since they only have state owned liquor stores - how's this good news?

We haven't had state liquor stores in years. It's still regulated, but they are privately owned. There are several in grocery stores, and the carry out down the street sells liquor. You can buy it till closing time, but only after noon on sundays.
Go Bucks....neverrmind
