That's kind of the point.

Still, you have to remember that we're talking about a nation that blames music for murders and the internets for everything.

Because it's easier for Giants fans to blame the refs than their defense when it fell apart - complete with Strahan's douchebaggery (screaming at TO to look at the scoreboard when the 49ers were down 21-38).

2012-01-20 11:47:25 AM
He wasn't even the biggest bonehead on that play. They had a time out and an extra down, but everyone panicked.

2012-01-20 11:52:02 AM
He was a capable coach during his brief time in Calgary with the Stampeders. I'm surprised that he doesn't get coaching opportunities at the college level.

Yup. You know it's bad when the NFL apologizes for the call the next day. Seubert was an eligible receiver, was tackled before the ball got there, and got flagged for illegal receiver downfield. What a clusterfark.

That said, none of this ever happens if the Giants don't blow that huge lead. Junkin farked up but he was hardly alone.

What is the point of such an article without an accompanying video.

2012-01-20 02:07:30 PM
Trey Junkin certainly didn't lose that game, it was lost by the clowns who stopped playing at 38-14 and let the 49ers back into the game.

And Junkin was hardly the first guy on the Giants FG unit to have problems that year, they couldn't execute a kick to save their lives. Even if they'd called the pass interference penalty on the final play, they wouldn't have made the FG. They could have had 10 chances and not made it.

BiffDangler: What is the point of such an article without an accompanying video.

Because Shoepisser called the game.

That aside, two things:

1. I can't believe Fassell wasn't jumping and screaming and trying to find every referee imaginable to explain to the head ref that the player had been reported as eligible.
2. Blaming Trey Junkin on that is tantamount to blaming Bill Buckner for the last twelve innings of failure by McNamara, that assclown Schiraldi and any number of other factors in 1986.

2012-01-20 02:22:38 PM
This ranks #2 in sports moments blocked out of my head forever, only behind Crosby's Overtime goal in the Olympics that never happened.

2012-01-20 02:23:53 PM
It would've been blocked with a good snap anyway. There was a 49er defender right on the holder's face almost instantly.

I am neither a Giants or a 49ers fan, but as a football fan watching that I was screaming at the TV for the holder to fall on the ball, and then even louder that it was pass interference (as a former offensive and defensive lineman in HS and college I always listen for when the big uglys get to line up as eligible). One of the worst series of decisions and non-calls that I have ever seen.

HulkHands: Because it's easier for Giants fans to blame the refs than their defense when it fell apart - complete with Strahan's douchebaggery (screaming at TO to look at the scoreboard when the 49ers were down 21-38).

Just out of curiosity, who WOULDN'T say that when TO was acting like a moron trailing by 17 points? I'm quite sure any number of your beloved Patriots would do exactly the same thing, as would players on every team. You'd have to be an idiot to believe otherwise.

That said, you're right about the Giants general attitude in those days. Shockey dancing, taunting the fans and dropping a TD pass that would have made it 45-14. They were an undisciplined mess of a team, coached by a moron who didn't even know the rules and let the game end without making a stink about the missed penalty.

2012-01-20 02:36:25 PM
It also didn't matter because the Bucs would have beaten whichever team won that game anyway. They peaked in the playoffs and won their 3 games by a combined score of 106-37.

It's even worse than blaming Buckner. Buckner at least had played the season with the Sox and wasn't washed up quite yet. Junkin got called out of retirement at 41.

2012-01-20 02:43:51 PM
I was going to suggest "Miracle at the Meadowlands" (not the walk-off punt return, but the first one), but that was actually a bad handoff and not a bad snap.

/And a bad offensive coordinator
//He never worked for a football team again IIRC

Cool story bro!! Actually really - very well written and balanced. Didn't see the game and don't remember seeing the play - but now I wish I had.

2012-01-20 03:00:25 PM
Yeah it was the bad snap, not the fact that stupid jeremy shockey dropped a "lay-up" touchdown that would have sealed the game.

And someone should hire this guy - seems to be an upright guy - and how rare is it for someone to actually take accountability for themselves these days.

People really blame him for this loss?

The non-pass interference call might be the worst reffing mistake in the history of the NFL.

/Rivers' incomplete pass by Hochuli was bad too, but I don't think it was the playoffs
//Tuck Rule was awful, but it was in the rule books - right call, dumb rule, and I'm a Raiders fan
///Immaculate Reception is still too tough to tell to this day
////No holding call on the helmet catch? Pretty bad too, but not as obvious

Out of slashies....any others? Steelers-Seahawks comes to mind.

I just watched the video. That's it? The Worst Snap Ever was about a foot to the left? I just assumed it went over his head or bounced sideways or something. He shouldn't feel bad about that. Really, yeah it sucks, but if everyone else did their jobs that day it wouldn't have mattered.

There was the play in SBXL where Hasselbeck threw a pick and then was called for a personal foul "low block" when he tackled the guy with the ball. Or the Steelers' first touchdown that they never scored.

Wow, I'd completely forgotten about the Romo/Seattle game. Seems like a thousand years ago.

That one also had a lead-up play you could blame. The play before the bungled snap, Romo hit Witten with what looked to be the winning TD pass, but Witten got stood up at the 1/2-yard line by Lofa Tatupu.

Jason Witten: 6'6", 265 lbs
Lofa Tatupu: 6', 240lbs

If that was the case, there would've been a re-kick.

Or wait, if the time is 00:00 and there are offsetting penalties, is there another down? I don't know the rules....

The game cannot end if there's a defensive or offsetting penalties because it's as if the previous play did not happen. There would have been an untimed down from the previous spot, Matt Bryant would have shanked the kick 30 feet left, and the 49ers still would have won.

Yes. If offsetting penalties or a defensive penalty occurs on the final play the offense is allowed to run another play.
