538 is projecting Gingrich favored to win now: Link (new window)

That we even before last night, and I think most think Gingrich did better than Romney last night. We might look back at that tax returns question as the turning point in Romney's campaign if somehow he does lose to Newt.

Unless Santorum pulls off some surprise and gets a lot more right wing Christian votes in the North of the state and drops Romney to 3rd (which, while polls are not showing it, Santorum was also basically 7-8 points behind Romney in the last polls before Iowa, and he basically got every undecided), I don't see him being able to make many strides unless he pulls off a stunner in Florida.

Paul will just stick around to be a pest if nothing else.

Assuming it goes Gingrich, Romney, Santorum/Paul Saturday, you'll have essentially this so far:

Romney: 1st (Tie), 1st, 2nd
Gingrich: 4th, 4th (Tie), 1st
Santorum: 1st (Tie), 4th (Tie), 3/4
Paul: 3rd, 2nd, 3/4

While in the "what have you done for me lately" department, Gingrich will have that 1st in his pocket. He'll also have the "historically S.C. has picked the nominee since 1980, where as Iowa & NH have not been that accurate" fact. How that plays down into Florida, who knows. But, Romney will still have two 1st's and a 2nd, and nobody else has been 1 or 2 in all 3 so far. But, in the end, unless something surprising happens, I think it is basically Gingrich vs. Romney going into the Feb contests and then Super Tuesday.

I don't know what to make of this anymore, but I still maintain the sooner we get to the general election the better. Right now this is just free publicity for the Republcian party while energizing their party base.

Santorum's money will run out after South Carolina, the GOP will try to kill off Newt's money and future staff, but that will only make him stronger. Newt's message of "A vote for Romney is a vote for four more years of Obama" will doom Romney as no conservative will spend a single minute doing anything for him this summer/fall.

Ron Paul is the Antichrist!?

Oh. Anarchist.

Still, you can see where I might have gone wrong.

dletter: Unless Santorum pulls off some surprise

Really unlikely. Gingrich is winning Romney support and more coalescing the anti-Romney group.

Changing the way I worded it and lost the key word.

aww, poor Mittens.

his hope of a quick primary is shot, hopefully.

so how much of a financial advantage will Obama have by the time the primary is over? $200 million?

2012-01-20 01:48:36 PM
Surprise Santorum is the worst.

Also, if I every buy a race horse, I now have some name ideas.

That Newt Farking Gingrich might actually get the nomination is just astounding to me. How is it that this disgraced, failed, hack has any support at all?

Plus it is quite possible Gingrich pulls in the majority of Perry's 4-6%, which might just be enough to tip it over the top.

newt gringrich hasn't done a thing in 10 years, and he wants to be president?

willard hasn't done a thing for 10 years and he wants to be president?

why is no one bothered by that in the GOP?

Can somebody catch me up on what "insanity" went on last night? I heard about Gingrich being all pissy about the moderator asking him questions about his past wives, but other than that what did I miss?

I have to imagine some of the big guns haven't even spent their pre-allocated campaign budgets. They are probably just spending their "fun money" on the early games, while keeping a sizable stash for the real game. with unlimited contributions available, why not have a little sport early on?

Another overnight 20+ point swing in a poll with absolutely no explanation. I've never seen anything like this race in my entire life.

/at least it wasn't Santorum again

Ron Paul is an anarchist in the same way that Obama is a socialist.

Lando Lincoln: Can somebody catch me up on what "insanity" went on last night? I heard about Gingrich being all pissy about the moderator asking him questions about his past wives, but other than that what did I miss?

Gingrich went into pure Righteous Pretentious Holy Warrior Beast-mode, with the CNN moderators as his foils, to much applause. Against that, Romneybot just looks like toast and warm milk. Santorum got some licks in on Gingrich, too. *shudder*

I will refer you to Norm McDonald's opening monologue when he first hosted SNL.

"When the people here asked me to do the show, I've got to say, I felt kind of weird. I don't know if you remember this, but I used to actually be on this show.... So then, a year and a half ago, I had sort of a disagreement with the management at NBC. I wanted to keep my job. Right? And they felt the exact opposite. They fired me because they said that I wasn't funny.... But, now, this is the weird part, it's only a year and a half later, and now, they ask me to host the show. So I wondered, how did I go from being not funny enough to be even allowed in the building, to being so funny that I'm now hosting the show? How did I suddenly get so goddamn funny?! It was inexplicable to me, because, let's face it, a year and a half is not enough time for a dude to learn how to be funny! Then it occurred to me, I haven't gotten funnier, the show has gotten really bad! So, yeah, I'm funny compared to, you know, what you'll see later."

Somehow I'm sensing a Santorum / Perry 2016 bumpersticker.

Could just be the result of my participating in a drinking game during the debate last night. Every time a candidate duplicated another candidate SHOT.

I honestly do not know. My aunt is actually excited about Gingrich. I really need to sit down with her and ask her why. It's like she completely forgot about 1998.

I've heard a number of people say stuff like, "Newt will be able to bring people in Congress together to get things done."

Newt Gingrich. Bring Congresspeople together. Really.

The last time Newt brought Congresspeople together on an issue, they kicked his ass out of his Speaker position.

The current GOP voter base has scared away all of the moderates that would have considered running for the presidential nomination. The only thing left to choose ARE disgraced, failed hacks.

DarnoKonrad: I don't know what to make of this anymore, but I still maintain the sooner we get to the general election the better. Right now this is just free publicity for the Republcian party while energizing their party base.

It's firing up their base...only so they'll be even more let down once Romney eventually gets the nomination. Seriously, this is horrible for them. Time and again the GOP base rallies around someone--anyone--that's Not Romney, just to watch that someone fade and they be forced back to the every more horrible idea of supporting Romney.

This is not Clinton/Obama in 2008 where the two are basically strengthening each other with their competition and preparing the eventually nominee for the General Election. This isn't two candidates each with a very passionate group of supporters who at the end of the day more or less wanted the same thing, just from different candidates. This is a scorched earth campaign where the eventual nominee (Romney) doesn't have a very passionate group of supporters, and the majority of the GOP base is willing to back ANYONE but him. He's just being more damaged by the day with those people. And during the General, these are the people that knock on doors, GOTV. And when they stay home because they're like "Fark that guy", it's going to be great for the Dems on the downticket races.

I hope this goes on and on. Let them nuke each other into oblivion--all the while Obama gets to sit back, build up his warchest, and then bomb the rubble once the GOP nomination fight is over. It won't be a cakewalk for him, but this increases his odds.

He's running for the GOP nomination in 2012 and his main opponent is a less polished version of John Kerry? Christ almighty, he's one of the better choices out of the freak show that's been inflicted on the American public this election cycle. And that's with him being a disgraced, failed hack!

I just can't believe that this is reflective of the real world. This is the right-wingiest of the right wing in South Carolina. One state. There is no way you can tell me that the rest of the US actually buys into this masterful bullshiat that Gingrich is slinging. Especially since the really juicy stuff about Newt probably hasn't come out yet.

Exactly. If Romney is the Kerry of the right Gingrich is the Hillary Clinton of the right. Also there is such a thing as too much exposure and the regular self-immolation of the candidates shows it isn't working well for them.
