Being the ultra-Simpsons nerd that I am, I seem to remember Matt Groening saying how much he despised the joke that the plant was right across from the house in that one episode.

Groening often directly references Portland, Oregon. When the power plant was more prominently featured, plant-heavy episodes often revolved around local concerns with the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant, whose nuclear reactor was damaged within a month of going into service and was unrepairable until it closed. Most of the auxillary character names are named after Portland streets. Springfield Elementary is, by no coincidence, a cartoon copy of Ainsworth Elementary, where he went to grade school.
Most of the time, he's spot on. But the thinly veiled criticism of Portland's MAX light rail system in the "Monorail" episode turned out to be largely unfounded as time has told.

Shelbyville and Springfield are both in KY, a 3 hour commute to the nearest plant, a 4 hour commute to the one pictured.

The project is managed by Bechtel. They have a sketchy track record, like installing a a 420-ton nuclear-reactor vessel backwards at a different powerplant and having to redo the whole thing.

Obligitory...
Kent: On the line with us now is plant owner C. Montgomery Burns. Mr. Burns?
Burns: Oh, hello, Kent. [as loud rhythmic buzzing continues in the background]
Right now, skilled nuclear energy technicians are calmly correcting
a minor, piffling malfunction. [rapid-fire shots of havoc in the plant]
But I can assure you and the public that there is absolutely no danger
whatsoever. [air raid siren wails] Things couldn't be more ship-shape.
[cut to Burns' office, where he is busy donning a radiation suit]
Smithers: Sir, where is radiation suit?
Burns: How the hell should I know? [covers the name `Smithers' on the suit
he is wearing]
Kent: Uh, Mr. Burns, people are calling this a meltdown.
Burns: [laughs] Oh, meltdown. It's one of those annoying buzzwords. We prefer
to call it an unrequested fission surplus.

TVA ordered the unpaid safety work stoppage at the reactor project between Chattanooga and Knoxville in response to finding cables being erroneously removed from the plant's operating Unit 1 reactor in December and discovering last week that a valve in the Unit 2 reactor now under construction was improperly removed from another system.
*headdesk* Okay, what the hell does "cables being removed from the plant's operating reactor" mean, exactly? Like, they were erroneously cutting control cabling? They screwed up the CAT6 for the operating room? Some asshole did a lift wrong? WHAT? This is so vague I have no idea what it means. Any work mistake is treated as severe, but seriously, this could be anything from severing control room cabling to some asshole unplugged the building teledose repeaters.
As for the second bit, it's an under construction unit. Dammit, maintenance, pay attention to where valves are supposed to go.
