Probably 10 or 12 years ago in a dinky historic town near me, a house was stealing power from its next-door neighbor, City Hall, just with an extension cord to an outdoor receptacle. Someone from the city noticed it and thought it was a contractor doing a remodel but he still unplugged it and threw the cord back over the fence. The next day the cord was back, but this time the city worker looked inside the house and saw the city was paying for a meth lab's electric.

Man, I wish just once someone would fly cross country in a cessna and just toss seeds out the window.

Of course it was exhaustive. After you smoke a yard full of weed, everything is exhaustive. I'm feeling exhausted right now. I'm so thirsty. I think that guy has chips.

I love how the cops didn't notice the smell, but when they pull you over after hours the first thing they say is "smells like alcohol in here." Even if no one has had a drop.

From TFA:"In the last 12 months alone Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has extinguished 10 blazes at premises where there has been a cannabis farm.

"The message for anyone involved or thinking of getting involved is that it is simply not worth the risk."

Really? Because my thought was, sure would be nice if they could just grow it safely and legally outside where they don't need elaborate stealth set ups, or if they could just hire a legal electrical contractor to install their lights without being arrested.

Marijuana/hemp is a weed in the literal sense: It grows wild. Not the good stuff, of course, but it's entirely possible for seeds to sprout wherever they get dropped. Then they grow like, well, weeds.

We found a four-foot tall hemp plant in amongst the landscaping in Disney's California Adventure one day--our on-site cop had to go and uproot it and tag&bag it like it was evidence. It was all by itself, just the one plant, nice and green and healthy. How did it get there? Someone dropped a roach? A bird flew over and shiat out a seed? Who knows.

A lot of pot farms would probably go unnoticed if only the farmers were smart enough to hide the plants out in regular weeds.

"The message for anyone involved or thinking of getting involved is that it is simply not worth the risk."

Actually, by outlawing it and creating a black market, you have made it worth the risk.

Growing pot really doesn't smell like much unless you're close. It doesn't have that unique pot stench until it's been dried and/or crushed. If you're upwind of a field, you might not notice, especially in a city where everything smells like car exhaust.

Alcohol in a closed car smells like alcohol; although if you've been in a club and smell like smoke, what the cops mean is "Smells like you MIGHT HAVE BEEN drinking."

Don't ask how I know this.

Replying "Well, it smells like pork out there" is a pretty sure-fire way to get tasered.

More than 300 plants worth around £100,000

Every quote in that article was copspeak.
Things I learned from this article:

Manchester cops are winning the war on cannabis.
Criminal gangs are disrupted by large amounts of pot.
Exactly 10 fires were caused by cannabis farms in the last year.
Fire is the greatest risk in growing marijuana.
Cops can't find a pot farm in a big building unless it burns down.

Some cannabis strains are very stinky and doesn't even need to be touched to be smelly.

Obviously you haven't been around a healthy potent plant then.

patrick767: More than 300 plants worth around £100,000

I heart cop math.

A plant could get over 200 grams each (about 8 ounces) and at current prices of AFAIK £150+ per ounce would be 150x8x300 which is a minimum of £360,000

At that sort of price you would have to get 2.22 ounces (63g) per plant. Looking on the net there are seeds advertised that get 500g a plant so I would say that, in this possibly isolated case, the police have UNDERestimated the value of a crop. Possibly by a factor of 8-9

Not for nothing... but shouldn't the headline say " Just Metres from the police station "? And they didn't answer the big question. How many litres are there to a hogshead?

Newsflash

Cops do not generally start every shift by searching the premises next door to the station and working their way out from there.

/There's a lot of rain in Manchester, the windows of cop cars and stations are generally shut.

I've never seen a live plant and I knew that. Walk past mint and it's not too strong. crush it, however....
