Let's just tell the world and the Iranian people that we're going to bomb 3 power generation facilities daily as long as they've shut down the strait. If they're going to hold us hostage over energy then we'll hold them hostage to their energy. No ground forces needed.

Well the first and most obvious reason is that the average Iranian on the street farking LOVES the US, our clothes, our music, our culture-they can't get enough. However they are also an extremely proud people (in their minds they belong to one of history's 3 greatest civilizations- China and "The West" being the other two). If we start bombing them, or invade, they will rally around the (right now extremely unpopular) government in a heartbeat. If, on the other hand we continue to cripple thier economy with sanctions we will create conditions in the country very similar to the ones that touched off "Arab Spring" in Egypt in very short order.

You're thinking WAY too small.

If Iran tries to close the straight the U.S. will be doing a hell of a lot more damage than that. It would also be on a near nonstop basis starting several hours later.

And there's no need to tell the world because everybody in the world who is at all informed already knows this including the Iranians.

And that turned out great.

Well as it hasn't "turned out" at all just yet, I withhold judgment. But why are Americans so impatient and anti-democracy when it comes to the rest of the world anyway. If we could have kept our farking hands off the budding Iranian democracy 60 years ago we'd probably have a stable, powerful regional ally in Iran, instead of Islamic theocracy that hates us. Same thing with Egypt. Even if the inital results of installing a true democracy in that country is that the Muslim Brotherhood takes over, imposes a more theocratic rule and deosn't like America very much, so the fark what if that's what the people of Egypt want?

Sooner or later people will tire of that, and given that they have a way to make democratic change, they'll be able to do something about that when the time comes. I think history shows that True democracies almost invaribly progress down the path of greater personal and economic freedom, and as they do, they become natural allies of the US, and ones we don;t have to be ashamed of supporting later
