Some French dude is always saying they are going to pull out and to just trust them. Lying, terrible people, really,

Hai! Am I too early for the idiots who will reply to sensible posts about getting the US out of Afghanistan with stuff like "our brave soliders are there PROTECTING YOUR FREEDOMS including the right of hipster douchebags like yourself to sit at home all day eating cheetos and complaining abut Bush?"

They should have left after Bush gave up and took his dog & pony show to Iraq.

Duh.

Didn't learn from Vietnam, huh? Or French Indochina as it were.

Watch the extended version of Apocalypse Now. Includes a scene with remaining French colonials. Pretty powerful scene. Good explanation of that clusterf*ck.

Yeah, I got the DVD set. Good stuff. The stuff with the bunnies in the crashed copter makes that leaderless camp by the river even more surreal.

I'm surprised they're not still blaming Lincoln for stuff today.

France was still in Afghanistan? What do they have 300 troops?

2012-01-20 09:22:51 AM
Since we have no realistic war aims in Afghanistan, why hang out and bleed for no good reason?

Apocolypse Now is one of my favorite movies of all time.

The whole movie seems like a metaphor for the war and PTSD - the further upriver/deeper into the war they go, the crazier and surreal things get. It's just a beautiful descent into madness.

/madness?

And that logic machine Obama had one positive statement about Afghanistan: It isn't as stupid as Iraq. That was it.

The French are smart enough to learn from the past and see a bad situation and cut their losses. In other words they are not like the American retards that spend decades losing and then tucking tail and running while talking about how tough they are.

Got one of those in my family. Fortunately only by marriage. She said grace at a thanksgiving one year and used those words about how her brother in the army was protecting our freedom. I could see steam coming out of my nieces ears. Ever since then both nieces have jumped on saying grace just to keep her from opening her mouth again.

Hubert: The Vietnamese are very intelligent. You never know what they think. The Russian ones who help them, "come and give us their money. We are all Communists. Chinese give us guns. We are all brothers."... They hate the Chinese! Maybe they hate the American less than the Russian and the Chinese. I mean, if tomorrow the Vietnamese are Communists they will be Vietnamese Communists. And this is something you never understood, you American.

Gaston de Marais: I don't know. Maybe in the future we can make something with the Vietnam.

Philippe de Marais: Don't you understand? The VC say, "go away, go away". That's finish for all the white people in Indochina. If you're French, American, that's all the same. "Go." They want to forget you.

They've been there for 10 years and 78 of their soldiers have died. Any more ignorant questions?

FTFA:

"The four French service members were killed and a number were wounded on Friday when a gunman wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon on them, ... The gunman is in custody, a NATO official said."

FOUR killed, SIXTEEN soldiers wounded. And the dude was taken alive. An AK with an extended mag carries what, 30 rounds?

WTF? Were the French le tired? Why wasn't that Afghan hamburger -- did they even return fire?

/great deals on French rifles: never used, dropped once, etc.

One of the things I never knew about Vietnam till I started hanging out with some Vietnam Vet bikers was how scary/awesome the Aussie special forces are and the role they played in Vietnam (going in ahead of even the SEAL teams sometimes)

That's because hey used concrete.

I knew some French soldiers in Afghanistan. They were good at what they did. They would roll out 2 at a time with about 30 ANA and go all over the dang place. I will not say an unkind word about them. They did a lot more than most 'allied' countries would do, and for a lot longer, too.

2012-01-20 10:46:23 AM
The French were smart and got out of Vietnam early. in fact, Ho Chi Minh asked for American help prior to asking for help from communists. And you know where he got his training? That's right, from the OSS during WWII. Remind you of anybody?

Am I the only one that read that as "colorizing"? Everyone knows the 13th century was black and white.

Figures. Troops are (in many if not most cases) volunteer forces who recognize that their purpose is to go to war, even if the hope is that they never will. France simply wants to give up after four deaths? I shudder to think what will happen to Europe if another war were to break out there and they didn't have any allies willing to go in and help them defend their lands.

They learned just fine. They tried to warn us. We didn't listen, because...U-S-A U-S-A

Just like the British and the Russians warned us about Afghanistan....but, again, we didn't listen.

Well, they got out, but it wasn't voluntary, they were thrown out on their asses.

Go read "Hell in a Very Small Place" for the details.

06Wahoo: France simply wants to give up after four deaths?

No, they want to give up after 82 deaths. Does that somehow make it better for you? If not, how many of them should die before you'd be able to thank them for volunteering for your war?

De rien.

Yea,it's not like they don't have domestic problems to take care of.
