One violent sex crime was committed by a soldier every six hours and 40 minutes in 2011. While I admire the stamina, they should probably stop him

Sergeant Rapey is the backbone of the Army there, subby. Without his tireless dedication and hard... work, where would the lower ranks learn to be that productive?

You gotta wonder how many sex crimes in the Army are actually reported. By all accounts, women are VERY strongly discouraged from filing those reports. The actual rate has got to be at least three times as high.

Bring them home and get help for those that need it.
This is a combination of military psych ops to dehumanize the people so that the soldiers will follow orders or atrocities, mixed with some seriously bad situations these poor guys have to go through that really mess up their minds.
Get them out

The problem I see is that the VA will be no help to many of these men. It's an unfortunate reality that the US government uses them as toilet paper and then flushes them into the system. I know because I was treated that way, and now I do my best to talk every kid who asks me out of enlisting in the military.

By 4 a.m. New Year's Day, we'd already had drive-by murder committed by a soldier. The guys are coming back messed up, and they are always ready to fight or shoot. Not surprising, given how many times they've been deployed.

I had to take "Sexual Assault Prevention Training" when I arrived at Nellis. The facilitator (I won't call her an instructor) said 26 times some permutation of "only 10% of sexual assaults are reported".
Someone, a geeky looking Major I think, finally put his hand in the air and said "Citation, please".
I LOL'ed.

I would hazard a guess that the opportunity to potentially go overseas and kill people without getting in trouble probably attracts some farked up people.
Is there any level of psychological testing that goes into recruiting?

From anecdotal evidence from former servicewomen I know, I'd tend to agree with you. It is a SERIOUS problem the military really isn't coming to grips with. Part of it is inhereintly biological. We know for a fact that men's sex drives (production of testosterone, sperm count, etc) increase astronomically after near-death experiences-which makes evolutionary sense. It is one of the reasons that rape has been such a constant feature of wartime thoughout recorded human history.
A much Larger part of it however is a lack of Command Will to eliminate the problem. We ask soldiers to overcome all sorts of other, even stronger biological urges, like the self preservation instinct-though military discipline and training. It's a matter of overcoming the sexism of the senior command ranks more than anything I think. Soliders seem to have an extreme "Madonna/Whore Complex" when it comes to females in the ranks.
For example, I know woman who was a Seabee Lt who found herself as the only US servicewoman in Somalia back in the "Blackhawk Down" days. While she's an extremely "sex-positive" woman generally, she was chaster than a nun during her whole time there. When I asked he why she explained, utterly matter of factly, that as long as she didn't show interest in anyone, she was safe, as her entire platoon would defend her honor like they would their own kid sister's. The minute she hooked up with anyone, she knew she'd be regarded as "fair game" for EVERYONE, her own feelings in the matter be damned

It's not just when they get home. A friend of mind recently got back from KAF (she's a member of the Canadian Forces), and just before she got there some soldiers raped and left for dead 2 Canadian female soldiers.
The reputation Americans have with the forces from other countries is abysmal. If females are alone and see an American, they start to walk away, it's that bad in many cases. She said the running joke was that the rape whistles they got issued were best used to bring more people to the rape, not to stop it.
Sadly, she's not the only person whose told me those stories. My brother was US Army with 2 Iraq tours, and he's told me similar stories.

Women in the military. I applaud the effort, but unfortunately the majority of rank and file male soldiers have come from a modern culture of misogyny and high self esteem.
Is it sexist to say that men rape women?

You'll need a much larger sample size, and to commit the crime different ways, against different ethnicities, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Then you'll have to adjust for the victim's drug and alcohol content at the time--date rape reporting is thought to be practically non-existent. And that's just the start. Maybe we should put Mr. 6 hours and 40 minutes to good scientific use.

I bet its more akin to police departments only hiring officers whose IQ is *below* a certain
threshold and who show herd mentality tendencies.
I thought about going into the military - even went and talked to our local army recruiter,
took the ASVAB, etc... I was bummed when I was told that I couldn't do anything combat

I have a friend who is a former marine and she says either you become a slut and are just okay with it or get raped frequently. Either way, if you are a woman you will be having sex no matter how you feel about it. One woman on base filed a rape charge after her first encounter and the command staff let her be constantly tormented by the other soldiers. She ended up committing suicide over it and all my friend learned was never file a rape charge. This was maybe ten years ago. I hope things have improved since then because it is a real travesty these things even happened.

The base I was at in Djibouti, in '05 I think, there'd be a mass email about twice a week warning females to not walk around on base after sunset by themselves. Not even from their tent to the heads. There were at least 3 rapes that year that I know of - out of a population of around 1500 troops.
/I cannot fathom why anyone would have been raped there; we had a major running a one-woman prostitution ring out of various port-a-shiatters.

My cousin's a Sergeant in the Army, and I remember hearing him talk about how whenever he has to deal with problems reported by subordinates that involve women, there is a long string of required procedures in place intended to help prevent shiat like this.
I think the military is aware of the problem and trying to fix it, but given that their purpose is mainly to kill other people on command, it's going to be a tough road.

I'm telling you, it'd be a cold day in hell before I advised my sister, daughter or wife to enlist in the military. As an officer, sure no problem. But being an EM (enlisted man, which is used to define men or women) is pretty much the closest thing to being a slave I could imagine (short of actual slavery) and sexual degradation is too easy to comprehend.
I served a 2-year enlistment (got out about 17 days before 9/11), and heard of 2 instances of sexual assault while I was in. One was on a drunk passed out female mechanic, the other was on a guy in my platoon, a member of the platoon sergeant's tank. If a tanker can damn near get raped, it can happen to anyone, anytime. Even officers, though if that happened I'd expect that fellow's penis to be missing before CID got a hold of him.

If a rape is unreported, how can it be counted? I discount the "unreported" rape figures. They are estimates at best and usually biased. In the military, they would be called a SWAG (stupid wild-assed guess).
"Were you raped?"
"Yes."
"Did you report it?"
"No."

Two local soldiers have committed suicide recently rather than be re-deployed. This is in Charlottesville, VA, not some hard core military post at all. Those conditions stress people beyond and reasonable limit...we're talking guys with families, kids, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if their stress manifested in other ways too...included sexual assault, pissing on dead soldiers, etc.
