(Short List) Amusing British TV announcers have been deliberately mispronouncing The Simpsons for years. This would never happen with Downton Abbey   (shortlist.com) divider line 30

Is it really "mispronouncing" or just how they say things. I remember when that Vernon Kay guy was hosting that "Hit Me Baby one more time" show on NBC years ago, and he kept calling Vanilla Ice, "Vaniller Ice". I think it is just different accent stuff in some cases that we just think is odd.

/And Downton Abbey is pretty good.

I knew a girl downtown called Abbey.

That is to say, I *knew* her *downtown* if you get my drift.

Speaking of things British -- I saw that The Tiger Lillies did last the theme for last Sunday's show. I was hoping they would do more in the show.

That was hysterical. The one that really got me going:

"Maggie is no dummy, when.... when it comes... to dummies. Up next the Flinstones."

Thats awesome.... Hey, I want the BBC on this side of the pond without paying out the ass for a special cable package... I just KNEW that whole declaration of independence would bite us in the ass, and well HERE IT IS!!!!

Alright, that was pretty funny. I wish corporate America didn't have such a stick up its collective ass so people could have a little harmless fun once in awhile on this side of the world.

Now I just wanna talk quickly about language, and then we can all go. Yeah, language. They do say Britain and America are two countries separated by the Atlantic Ocean, and it's true. No, they say, "two countries separated by a common language," that's the line; it's an Oscar Wilde line, I think. And we do pronounce things in a different way, like you say "caterpillar" and we say "caterpillar," and... You say "aluminum" and we say "aluminium." You say, "centrifugal" and we say "centrifugal." You say, "leisure" and we say "lizuray." You say "baysil" and we say "bahsil." You say "'erbs" and we say "herbs," because there's a farking "H" in it... But you spell through THRU, and I'm with you on that, 'cause we spell it "THRUFF," and that's trying to cheat at Scrabble.

and here I was thinking they simply hired people with speech impediments to do the news. Just like they normally go out of their way to hire unattractive actors and actresses for their tv shows.

I'll have to find that. I've stopped watching that show for years, and they go and do something cool like get the Tiger Lillies involved.

Anyone else (who's actually watched the video) wonder if it's more an issue of licensing terms? Sounds more like they are not allowed to say "The Simpsons" and so they lead into it, well identifying the characters so folks know what show they're talking about, then toss off an oddball show title because they can't say the real one.

Why would they be allowed to play the show but not say the name?

Who the Fark knows? I mean, copyright laws and licensing agreements... who the Fark knows?

Probably they're just being "funny".
