Why in the fark would a 10-year old need a license to use a shotgun in the first place?

Oh. It's bloody England. Nevermind.

/and, who gives a crap anyway, it's bloody england

What could possibly go wrong?

A bunch of kids could have a good time while learning gun safety while popular British notions regarding guns (the kind spawned by the media and politicians) could be undermined.

FTA: "Between 2008 and 2010, a total of 281 children aged 11 and under were granted licences - one of them as young as seven."

Feh...I was shooting guns before I was 10 years old. If you learn gun safety and responsibility when you're young, it usually sticks with you for the rest of your life.

2012-01-20 02:05:00 AM
Oh, and we didn't need a license, either.

What is with you British, anyway? Can't you, I don't know, supervise your children? Hell, my son is 9 and he already has himself a scoped .22 that he shoots with my supervision. Guess what? It's no big deal. Get a grip.

Me too. Closely-supervised target shooting as a preschooler. Unsupervised hunting at age 10. Not that uncommon if you grew up in the sticks.

I started shooting clay pigeons with a 20 gauge Remington when I was in fourth grade. It's not really that big of a deal.

I bet that woman who's 10 year old boy that is being tried for murder in Florida wishes they hadn't licensed shotguns! Oh wait, he used a knife. LET'S BAN ALL KNIVES!!!

If Briton bans their toddlers from having guns then only third world toddlers will have guns.

Started shooting cans with a .22 when I was three (needed to rest it on folded jacket).

Started shooting bows (crappy little plastic thing) and pistols (Walther PP and Ruger Security Six) at seven.

Started shooting shotguns (semi-auto 12ga) at 11 and was given a 12ga Mossberg 500 at 13.

I see nothing wrong with these kids learning to handle a firearm responsibly. Better than being like the rest of the UK and shiatting themselves at the mere thought of someone (even cops) having a firearm.

If you write SEVEN in the headline it means I should be more shocked and outragey I spose.

At age ten when I started we were allowed to buy ammunition.

This simply can't be true; a well-known Farker told me a couple of years ago that it was practically impossible to be granted a gun licence in the UK (despite several members of my family having one).

What I'm seeing is "Everyone! Panic about this thing which has been around for some time and hasn't been causing trouble!"

'The second is whether the chief constable feels there is no reason to grant an application,' said the MP. 'This wording skews things massively in favour of the applicants, putting the onus on the police to say why it shouldn't be granted.'

That would let the constable deny the application by simply saying "I don't see any reason to grant this application", skewing things massively against the applicants. I don't understand how the MP could say the exact opposite with a straight face.

I'm amazed that you could hold an M1 at 7. Those things are farking boats with a barrel. I love them, the weight really helps reduce recoil, and the .30-06 is a great round, but at 7 years old? Either you were a giant 7 year old, or had really negligent guardians.

I got a double barreled shotgun for my 8th birthday. My grandfather had to cut 2" off the stock so I could hold it properly.

A license for a shotgun? Damn.

I worked at a summer camp and one of things they did was take 5th graders trap shooting.

While I love my guns as much as the next guy and think their current state of affairs is ridiculous, I can actually see where they're coming from on this. I'm not keen on the idea of the government authorizing someone to use a gun but being unable to hold them accountable for what they might do with it.

Obviously they just need to remove the whole "age of criminal responsibility" thing and try newborns as adults. Stupid, freedom-hating Brits.

It sounds crazy but the earlier you teach kids to respect and safely fear guns the better. If a childs only access to guns is call of duty then that kid has potential to be a dangerous kid. I was taught how to shoot early with a lot of supervision and I turned out fine.

Yeah, did both rifle and shotgun (and archery) at BSA camps. Went on to teach archery and help run the rifle range at yet another camp (Camp Bomazeen, Belgrade Lakes, ME) when I was older. Dad also happened to bee our troop's rifle and shotgun merit badge councilor when I was a kid, so I 'd help him teach the other boys.

Yeah, and then they sell them to us and proceed to turn around and criticize us for our "gun culture" they they profit from. HYPOCRITES!

See, I'm hip to the plan, Brits. You want to kill us off so you can come back and take over again. I'm onto you now, Limeys.

Bad subby, this is Fark. In any situation, more guns are always better, and suggesting otherwise is to reveal yourself as a libtard nanny-state loving bleedhing heart with no grasp of how the real world works. Didn't you get the memo? Turn in your Fark account at the door.

silly subby. these children now know how to safely handle firearms. don't look at the UK and freak out over USA gun related crime statistics. most of our arseholes using guns in crimes are not hard working, tax paying, permit carrying legitimate firearms owners. they are scumbag street thugs, hoods and no-goodskis.

education & awareness is a good thing, subby.

Well, I learned to shoot at a young age too, but at a range and with a 22.
Of course supervised.
Children should not hunt, even most adults don't do it responsively and lot of accidents happen.
And whoever give something with such a brutal recoil as a shotgun or a garand to a 7 year old is an asshole.

I started shooting (with supervision, obviously) when I was six. It's really easy to teach a kid basic gun safety and have it stick.

In fact, that's precisely when you want to get them started, highly supervised of course. You want to get to them before they develop a teenage 'I know it all already' attitude.

The littlebopper is getting his first real gun on his birthday in a few weeks. I can't wait. When I took him shooting, he loved it, and you always remember your first gun. I still have mine, in fact. It's an old Marlin bolt action .22. I've had other guns, some much nicer, come and go, but I hold on to that one.

It's not the people who go through the hassles to get licensed you have to worry about. They have demonstrated they are law biding.
