Most days I don't see anyone that doesn't appear to have some kind of mental illness.

======================

Came Here to say that .......

also there are a great number more people who are "mentally ill" it just does not interfere with their lives or harm them , so would not be recognized as an illness.

I don't SUFFER from mental illness, I accept and embrace it.

Just like everybody else I am related to.

I'm not mentally healthy and fark the 1 in 5, neither are half the people I know.

That's one angle at least. The other one is that people are just people, born with the dice rolled a certain way and then twisted by life experience another way. When you know enough about anyone and the world in which they're immersed, the idea of who is "mentally ill" and who is not becomes pretty farking academic.

Amazing that a full 20% of the population has mental illness issues. Now that it has achieved genuine epidemic levels we can treat it as the new normal. It won't be long until we're all walking around popping our Prozacs, trading them for lithium like they're just different flavors, getting our chemical bliss out of vending machines.

Or, just maybe, it's all bullshiat. Like now everybody has ADD. Drugs! Drugs everywhere! Chemically stupified kids don't make waves! Or depression, now everybody in the richest country in the world, where everybody, even the homeless, live better than kings did in days of yore, is depressed. Drugs! Prozac for everybody!

20%. What a farking joke.

The article was unclear. Or I'm just tired. Are they including depression in their definition of mental illness?

If so, I'd think it'd be higher. All my friends have depression/anxiety issues. Then again, they're mostly lawyers. Comes with the territory.

There is no "normal". In fact, the belief that one is normal and NOT suffering from a mental problem is known as Delusional Normality Syndrome, a serious medical condition. But, there is medication which can help. Talk to your doctor!

It's a permanent ad for unrealistic body image, sexual obsession, and overconsumption. Sales have been booming for about 70 years now. 95% of the American public watches a TV at least once a day, and over 50% of us stare at it for more than an hour every single day. The constant message? "You are not attractive enough. You are not sexually active enough. You don't have enough money. Strive for these things." Mental illness, indeed.

boobsrgood: unrealistic body image

This is bullshiat. America is rife with fat farks, lazy lardasses, big biatches, portly potatoes, massive men, weighty women, and some people who are just too damn fat to even deserve alliterative derision and actually get real sympathy even in the middle of a joke. They're just fat as fark.

Go to Asia. Go to Africa. Get back to me about this "unrealistic" bullshiat. I see it walkin' around in real life all the time. If poor people could afford healthy food and time to cook it, we'd probbaly see a huge boom is actually attractive looking people.

Ain't impossible.

As for the reputed prevalence of mental illness? So many factors.

The line between what is a Label and what is just a mundane mental difficulty is unclear, culturally linked, and moves often. Some people have severe problems with their minds. Some people have a little more trouble bouncing back from sadness, or paying attention, or not worrying, or going the fark to sleep instead of posting on Fark. Etc. You live and you deal.

Another take: there are minor physical issues that we give names (and sometimes treatments) to. Someone might be prone to nosebleeds or have flat feet or mild vertigo or a shaky knee. We still aren't very good at clearly defining mental problems, but there's no reason why "mental illness" should only imply TOTES CRAY CRAY. Could just as easily apply to named but low-grade conditions that may not require formal treatment.

Inchoate: Could just as easily apply to named but low-grade conditions that may not require formal treatment.

Then what's the point? Hey, let's totally devalue a diagnosis of mental illness such that nobody takes it seriously anymore. Because if everybody's mentally il, then nobody is.

Your idiosyncrasies are not mental illness. That guy who goes crazy and assaults people if they move his imaginary pet turtle? Yeah, he's crazy. There are shades of gray in between, but I respectfully suggest that the shade be really farking dark before you go down that path lest you discredit everybody, especially people with real problems and not just occasional sadness over a life wasted because of youthful indifference or indiscretion.

1 in 5?

So, does that mean I have a lot of long lost family members since everyone in my family but my grandmother, my father, and I belong on Jerry Springer?

Seriously, if I could legally sell my family to Jerry Springer, I would never have to work again. Ever. And I could probably afford to host a weekly Fark party for the rest of my life.

What are your qualifications for determining who is and who is not mentally ill.

We are at work too much. Too many hours in one day, too many days in one week, too many weeks in one year, too many years of our lives...all so a very small number of people can continue hoarding more wealth than history's richest monarchs could ever use. They've had the best psychologists on their side for a few decades now, pilfering our passive brains in the form of captive audiences in front of the television, and I have to wonder if we'll ever recover as a culture from it?

Would it even be possible to re-educate the citizenry to strive for a sensible amount of materialism so that our consciousnesses can acquire the necessary amounts of down time?
