It is not yet clear what caused the chopper to go down.

Gravity. Case closed.

How many on board?

I was on one of these old whirly birds during Fleet week in NYC earlier this year and they look like they can carry a lot of people.

Bad news for all involved. Condolences.

What?

Perhaps the mission would have been successful and this loss of life could have been avoided if they'd had the equipment the needed, like a "CH-53 Landlocked Mountain Stallion." Damned defense cuts....

shiat I hate to hear this. Six families got the dreaded visit from somber, uniformed officials. I pray I never get it. My husband came home safe in December and I dread his inevitable return. My deepest condolences to the families.

Don't worry, he's just an idiot who thinks he's informed because a website told him he was.

Hopefully no Afghani people decided to urinate on the bodies and make a video to post on Youtube because that would just be inappropriate.

That is a CH-53E Super Stallion, not Sea Stallion. See the 3rd engine?

They were too busy training and arming them to do that to the Soviets.

Conservatives* would be OK with that. They've been saying that behavior is acceptable for the past week.

No kidding. That was the Soviet army. And they use totally different helicopters. Plus it was in the 80s.

What connection could there possibly be?

Very quickly counted 6 rotors. Didn't look carefully enough to see the seventh was coming straight on. Good call.

Agreed, both countries wasted massive amounts of money and too many lives in shiathole Afghanistan but the fact the members only jackets were in style at the time of the soviet invaded makes the situations totally different.

No, some of them think it's okay too. Problem is both groups think it's okay if you only do it to "bad guys" and from what I understand there may be some disagreement regarding just who that might actually be.

I feel terrible because I have a good friend stationed in Kunduz (way up north) and my first thought on reading the article was, "Oh, thank God - it happened in southern Afghanistan."

An awful time for those poor families who are getting horrible news tonight.

You know, this isn't the kind of news I need to hear right away.

Every single person who has a Marine serving in Afghanistan that may possibly be on this helicopter is going to have a shiatty few days.

See, you've done it again! Read my mind all the way from the East Coast!

Now I'm hoping my Air Force friend was not hopping a Marine chopper out to his work site. That would really suck.

They say the helicopter crashed, but maybe it was the onboard computer that crashed and then six people randomly died?
