Are you saying your mom can sleep in something that size???
Or is that a *really* big ferret?

My moms Ivy plant can fit in something that size. Violet is a small ferret. Out of Spaz pics so here are the birds. Squeekie and Squeeker. Almost counts for Caturday since Spaz likes to sit on top of their cage and stare down at them. ( The one that looks all wet just got done taking a bath.)

Matticus: Here's a conundrum for you farkers:

I love cats, and want to get a kitten, but I'm allergic. It's not a bad allergy; if I start playing with a cat, I'll get a little runny nose and itchy eyes if I touch my face near them. This doesn't happen with all cats however. My friend has a young, black, short-haired cat and I've never had an allergic reaction to her (is it just because she's still so young and hasn't developed whatever it is I'm allergic to?). I don't want to go the typical hypoallergenic route and get a Sphinx, (sorry Sphinx lovers, they're just too ugly) or a Siberian (too hairy). Are there any farkers with similar problems and possible solutions? Are there any breeds (maybe similar to my friend's?) that would be ok for me to get? Also, if I do get a kitten, I'd rather not have it declawed. How have you prevented your furniture from being destroyed? One more question (last one, I promise), I travel for my work about once a month, meaning I'm gone for 2 days at a time. Is that too long to leave a young cat alone; will it get bad anxiety/spray everywhere?

/long time lurker, first time poster
//will post pics if I end up getting one

No such thing as a hypoallergenic cat, all breeds can cause allergy symptoms. It has nothing to do with hair length or lack of hair. Allergens are found in the dander and saliva.

I have asthma and very allergic to cats and dogs, and I run a cat rescue. Some cats make me wheeze and sneeze more than others, no rhyme or reason for this, it's the individual cat. Kittens do seem to cause less symptoms than adult cats. Also you will probably become immune to your own cat after a while.
There are all kinds of allergy meds out there, talk to an allergy doc and find what works best for you. I take Singulair and Allegra, as well as Claritin on occasion. Zyrtec works great too but dries my nose out too much. You might have to try several to see what works for you.

Thank you for your decision not to declaw. As others have said, get a lot of different types of scratchers made out of different materials. Cardboard, sisal rope, carpet, etc. There are a lot of fun scratcher toys, mine love the incline scratchers and the turbo scratcher with a little ball that goes around it. Give the kitten lots of alternatives to your furniture. Also trim their nails often, if you do it when the cats are relaxed and don't force the issue, they'll get used to it quickly.

When you travel for 2 days, have someone check in on your kitten. I've left adults home alone, they are usually ok. But kittens get into everything, it's like leaving a 5 year old home alone. I just don't trust that they won't get hurt.

If you're not home all the time and want a kitten, get two kittens. They'll keep each other company and get in less trouble.

Oh and since I posted too many words... here's a cat....

Cute! At our old place I would leave the light on next to the screen door & Lars would play "whack-a-bug" for hours! It was soooo funny! I wish I had a pic of him doing it. Sometimes he'd play through the window screen - that made a LOT more noise & would often make me jump!

Hmm... Thought I at least had a pic of him at the door... no such luck.

Matticus: ya gotta sleep sometime:

I'm also allergic to cats. According to my allergist, you build up a resistance to the allergens from the cat you live with. Any time I've added a new fur baby to the clowder, I'll have problems for the first month or so and just have to take extra allergy meds (I recomment Claritin or Zyrtec since they are non-drowsy). As to the scratching, a loud NO and then taking them to their scratching post seems to work. Good luck getting a newby, I hope it works out for you.

Hadn't heard about that before. So when you first got one, you were on meds for a month or so before you didn't have to take them anymore?

SporkQueen:

Couple ideas...

* Talk to your family doc, I know friends with similar allergy situations who get along just fine with a low-dose allergy med every morning.

* Check out local rescues, they may allow you to "test drive," aka foster, a kitty for a week or so to make sure it's a good fit that doesn't make you all sneezy!

* "SoftPaws" are awesome for preventing clawing, they're little vinyl caps you superglue to kitty nails and keep things from getting shredded. Plus your kitty looks like they have a brightly-colored manicure!

* My cats have had no trouble being solo for a weekend, just make sure to leave lots of chows/water out, keep the radio tuned low on NPR, and keep some kitty toys available. Of course, a SECOND kitty to keep the first company is even better! :)

I'll try that, thanks!

Yes, pretty much any time I add an new fur ball I have to do the meds every day without fail for about a month and then I can start to cut back. It really takes about 3 months to totally acclimate but for me it's worth it.

I like the idea of fostering for a couple of weeks, that way you can see if the meds work as well for you as they do for me.

Agent Paper: I'm looking to get Daemon a proper cat tree but hundreds of dollars seems awfully steep for something he may just ignore. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bath time!
[farm8.staticflickr.com image 500x375]

Lots of great suggestions here, and I second or third the make your own if you're handy. We made one out of one full sheet of 1/2 inch plywood, 7 or 8 2x4x8s and a 35 dollar block of carpet remnant (which was enough to cover the whole thing twice) 3 foot square base with 4 18 inch square "shelves" spiraling around, sitting in notches in the center column (made of 4 2x4s) with support posts on the opposite corner. The one cat likes to climb up to the top shelf by using the tallest support pole. We had to recarpet that one last year, after about 4 years of use. We thought about enclosing the bottom shelf, but haven't done so. We put felt on the bottom to keep it from scratching the floor (especially since the support poles are all screwed in from the bottom), and it's really solid.

I will add that some cats like scratching some things and not others, so be prepared to experiment. One of ours only likes to scratch on the cardboard scratchers. The other likes the carpet remnant on the climber, and couldn't care less about the cardboard ones, no matter how much catnip we put on them. Fortunately neither of them has decided they really like the doorframes or the recliner :)

Hahahahaha. Yeah, it does have that little lighning bolt shaped white fur going on. He was in a house fire. We sadly couldnt find him or his brothers before being made to leave. His brothers didnt make it, very sadly. Takenouchi is a survivor. He hid under a rubber maid that melted on to him. When they found him and gave him to us in the ambulance, his eye was covered by a blob of silver plastic. He looked like a borg. :( we thought his eye would be gone, but it was not! It just took all the hair from around it permanantly. It also left many spots on him white, like the pigment was damaged. It was really bad. He lost his tail and for weeks had to be fed through a tube in his neck. He had big scabs everywhere (he has a frayed ear from it too.) We love him so much! I like to call him Prince Zuko (from Avatar: the last airbender).
